The Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences (EECS) in both the College of Engineering and the College of Computing Data Science and Society (CDSS), is the largest department on the Berkeley campus, consisting of over 130 faculty, adjunct, active emeriti and PIR appointments, 3,600+ undergraduates both in the College of Engineering and Letters and Science, 800+ graduate students, and 60+ staff members. EECS programs are consistently ranked in the top three by many measures, including U.S. News & World Report's national and global ranking. Annual operating budget (not including expenditures related to research, faculty start-ups, and student fellowships) for EECS is $40+ million.
The Department is actively engaged in teaching and research in the disciplines of Artificial Intelligence, Computational Biology, Databases, Graphics, Hardware / Architecture, Human-Computer Interaction, Operating Systems / Networking, Programming Systems / Software, Scientific Computing, Theory, Vision (in Computer Science) as well as Biosystems, Communication/Networking, Communications/Physical Layer, Control, Design, Modeling, and Analysis, Electromagnetics/Antennas, Integrated Circuits, Optics, Physical Electronics Devices, Physical Electronics/MEMS, Optoelectronics, Energy, Robotics, Signal Processing for Image & Video, Signal Processing for Speech & Audio (in Electrical Engineering).
Computer Science operates research and instructional laboratories in Soda Hall and Sutardja Dai Hall, and Electrical Engineering operates like facilities in Cory Hall and Sutardja Dai Hall. EECS also has a significant technical staff support structure to provide support for research and instructional laboratories and fabrication facilities.
This role involves activities associated with reaching, serving, and engaging external constituencies through programs, events, products, and services not primarily related to fundraising. Constituencies include industry partners, alumni, local community, government, parents, and the general public. Translates constituent needs and priorities into customized programs to create, enhance, and sustain relationships between the campus and its external constituencies.
The function of this position is to serve as the Director of the External Relations Programs and Operations, providing leadership and strategic planning in all matters related to external relations, especially in promoting positive relationships with external constituencies in order to achieve our academic mission of excellence in teaching and research.

35% Using institutional knowledge and awareness of alumni and other key constituency perception, designs, develops, and implements short and long-term strategic plans, programs, events, and activities. Designs, develops, and implements strategic plans to connect faculty and Department leadership to students, alumni, industry partners, and parents at special department outreach programs and events in order to fortify engagement and a sense of community. Promotes and implements the External Relations programs and activities with external constituencies (industries, institutions, parents, alumni, students, etc.) and strategizes goals to further deepen relationships with them, including student recruitment activities and programs. Explore, design, and implement new programs/events to further engagement with industry partners, parents, and alumni.
25% May oversee all aspects of complex external relations programs, projects, and events, including coordinating special programs and overseeing production of audio / visual or written and visual materials, and department communications on the EECS website. Develop plans and communication strategies related to EECS External Relations programs and operations, including parent and alumni network strategic vision and engagement goals. Plans, executes, and manages outreach communications to alumni, industry partners, and parents. Oversees of all External Relations programs and operations and provides leadership and guidance for successful implementations.
20% Analyzes, summarizes, and/or reviews data, reporting findings, interpreting results, and/or making recommendations for the External Relations programs' opportunities. Provides analysis and information of complex results or activities, and makes recommendations to Department leadership for outreach and engagement opportunities and programs, including funding opportunities.
10% Quickly and appropriately identifies, addresses, and mitigates unforeseen and/or rapidly unfolding events that may negatively impact relationships between the campus and various constituencies, keeping senior management appropriately advised and notified. Using advanced knowledge of the @cal alumni directory, Career Net, Career Connect, LinkedIn, and video tools, resolves highly complex issues regarding access and security requirements for constituency groups.
10% Responsible for managing and supervising the External Relations team (2 FTE). Provides leadership and guidance to the External Relations team for the successful operations of programs and activities coordinated by the team. Provides direction to subordinate staff in understanding and meeting EECS External Relations strategic and service objectives. Makes decisions on performance, salary actions, hiring decisions, and other human resources-related issues of managed staff. Develops staff job descriptions, recruits, hires, trains, develops, and evaluates. Interprets campus personnel policies and is responsible for the resolution of personnel issues or actions, in compliance with applicable campus HR policies and procedures. Determines permanent and temporary staffing needs. Organizes the overall work of the team; identifies and evaluates priorities; delegates or reallocates general responsibilities and specific tasks; and establishes or revises operating procedures and practices for external relations programs. Takes leadership in developing, sustaining, and enhancing a high-trust and nurturing collaborative team environment. Required Qualifications
