Mann-Grandstaff VA Medical Center (MGVAMC) seeks Physician - Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation on-site for our inpatient and outpatient facility Level 2 hospital with robust outpatient capabilities. Qualifications
To qualify for this position - you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine
The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
Current - full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State - Territory - or Commonwealth of the United States - or in the District of Columbia
Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training - approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification
(NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) - b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) -OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States) - which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences
Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs)
PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e. - not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis
PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged
rather - they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision
Additionally - surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs
Proficiency in spoken and written English
Preferred Experience: Preferred Amputee/Limb Loss Rehabilitation Experience - this is a priority for Veterans at MGVAMC Specialized Experience with prosthetic - orthotic - wheelchair - and adaptive equipment evaluation and prescription
Experience in outpatient rehabilitation management of Veterans or adults with amputations and spinal cord injury/disorders (SCI/D)
Experience in neurologic rehabilitation including stroke - TBI - MS - ALS - and complex mobility disorders
Experience working within an interdisciplinary rehabilitation team environment
Board certification/board eligibility in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation preferred

Duties include but are not limited to: Provide comprehensive outpatient Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) evaluation and longitudinal management for Veterans with amputations - spinal cord injury/disorders (SCI/D) - traumatic brain injury (TBI) - stroke - multiple sclerosis (MS) - ALS - neuromuscular disorders - and complex neurologic rehabilitation needs
Develop individualized interdisciplinary rehabilitation treatment plans focused on maximizing function - independence - mobility - safety - and quality of life
Evaluate and manage functional impairments related to mobility - balance - gait dysfunction - spasticity - weakness - cognitive changes - neurogenic bowel/bladder concerns - and adaptive equipment needs
Evaluate and manage functional impairments related to mobility - balance - gait dysfunction - spasticity - weakness - cognitive changes - neurogenic bowel/bladder concerns - and adaptive equipment needs
Provide amputee rehabilitation care including pre-prosthetic evaluation - residual limb management - prosthetic prescription recommendations - gait assessment - and coordination with prosthetists and therapy services
Provide outpatient rehabilitation management for Veterans with SCI/D including mobility optimization - spasticity management - pressure injury prevention - autonomic dysfunction education - and durable medical equipment recommendations
Assess and manage rehabilitation needs for Veterans with progressive neurologic disorders including MS and ALS - emphasizing functional preservation - adaptive strategies - caregiver education - and coordination of supportive services
Evaluate and manage post-stroke and TBI-related functional deficits including mobility impairment - cognitive symptoms - balance dysfunction - spasticity - fatigue - and community reintegration challenges
Coordinate care with interdisciplinary team members including physical therapy - occupational therapy - speech therapy - nursing - psychology - prosthetics - social work - recreation therapy - and specialty medical services
Prescribe and oversee rehabilitation equipment in conjunction with therapy services and assistive technology including wheelchairs - orthotics - prosthetics - seating systems - adaptive devices - and home safety modifications
Perform and interpret functional assessments to support rehabilitation planning - offer focused disability evaluations when required - community reintegration - and Veteran-centered goal development
Provide evidence-based management of musculoskeletal and neurologic pain conditions associated with disability - overuse syndromes - spasticity - gait abnormalities - and chronic neurologic disease
Educate Veterans - caregivers - and family members regarding diagnosis - prognosis - rehabilitation goals - self-management strategies - and prevention of secondary complications
Document clinical findings - treatment plans - and rehabilitation recommendations in accordance with VA policies - national PM&R standards - and quality performance measures
Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings - quality improvement initiatives - and program development efforts related to amputee care - SCI/D rehabilitation - neurorehabilitation - and Whole Health initiatives
