Departmental Overview
The School of Public Health Labor Occupational Health Program (LOHP) is a public service arm of the Center of Occupational and Environmental Health (COEH). LOHP serves as a national informational resource on job safety and health. The program offers training, printed and audio-visual materials, library services, and technical assistance to a broad constituency which includes labor unions, individual workers, health and legal professionals, other educational institutions, industry, government, and the general public. LOHP specializes in serving immigrant and other high-risk worker populations and is a highly respected source of multilingual educational programs and materials.

Position Summary
The Public Education Specialist supports administrative, event planning, outreach, and other needs for the Labor Occupational Health Program's (LOHP) public education programs. This position involves promoting and supporting various public educational programs, researches and assesses educational needs and interests for targeted public segments, develops outreach strategies for recruitment, and coordinates all logistical and administrative aspects of implementation.

Responsibilities
Organizes and provides support to existing public educational courses and assists in the implementation of programs, including arranging and analyzing logistics for training programs and presentations, negotiating with vendors to serve the needs of the program, preparing course materials, and developing/implementing tracking systems for program participants.
Responsible for training and event logistics.
Serves as primary contact for recruitment and enrollment for training.
Responds to requests for project information from unions, educational institutions, agencies, and others.
Assists with promotion of public education programs and educational outreach messaging on key topics through social media channels and web updates.
Supports design of basic educational fact sheets, flyers, newsletters and email marketing as well as development of short videos.
Assists in developing, preparing, and reconciling budgets for program.
Processes program expenses and maintains project budgets.
Sets up contracts with vendors; process stipends and check requests for payment to consultants and others as needed.
Negotiates with various vendors that serve the needs of the projects.
Coordinates deliveries and pick-ups as well as assures reasonable pricing for services rendered.
Sets up fee-for-service contracts.
Audits vendor invoices and ensures prompt payment of invoices and reimbursements.
Arranges for Program Coordinator(s) travel and process travel expense reports.
Ensures that charges match the approved operating budget and ensures they're charged to the correct account.
Initiates and assists in developing strategic public education outreach plans.
Conducts needs assessments.
Identifies and attends community-based events to build relationships with potential partnering organizations and conduct direct outreach to LOHP's target populations.
Works with program coordinators, designers, and translators to ensure accuracy and accessibility of curriculum materials in all languages.
Assembles public education materials.
Manages independent projects that involve identifying and interfacing with internal and external designers, printers, translators, and others.
Coordinates printing of materials with external printers.
Translates, or arranges to be translated, small amounts of text (Spanish, Cantonese, or other language spoken by populations served by LOHP) as needed (for example, flyers, forms, and responses to short questionnaires).
Assesses presentation/course results through participant evaluations and levels of interest shown and assists in developing summaries for reports.
Initiates and maintains ongoing contact with a diverse audience of project participants using phone, email, online surveys, and in-person interviews.
Assists in planning and scheduling course offerings.
Maintains and updates overall project calendars, participant or outreach databases and project files.
Takes minutes at program-related meetings and conference calls as needed.
Manages LOHP student worker project work for one or more projects, which includes ensuring duties are completed to a satisfactory level.
Assists in conducting analysis, prioritizing work assignments, and developing program recommendations.
Participates in workshops, trainings, and other professional development activities in consultation with supervisor.
May participate in committees, projects, and other service activities.
Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Working knowledge of and/or ability to learn departmental and organization policies and procedures; knowledge of educational program content and objectives.
Experience with design software (Adobe Suite or Canva) and experience designing flyers, social media, or other short pieces.
Strong organizational skills, including attention to detail and analytic skills.
Demonstrated experience in event/conference planning or related activities.
Ability to make decisions, manage multiple project activities, meet deadlines, and solve problems.
Good reading, verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills, and good presentation skills.
Education / Training
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Continuing education in related field.
Preferred Qualifications
Bilingual (English/Spanish).
Knowledge/experience working with and/or ability to learn how to work with labor or community-based organizations that serve LOHP target populations.
Knowledge/experience with WordPress for web updates and video editing skills (for short social media educational segments).

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $29.50-$32.75.
This is a non-exempt, bi-weekly paid position.
This is a 2-year, full-time (40 hours/week) Contract position eligible for UC benefits.

This position is eligible for up to 3 days/week remote work within the United States. Exact arrangements are determined in partnership with your supervisor to meet role responsibilities and department needs and are subject to change.
