Job Description Summary
Under the Director of Agronomy’s supervision, the assistant superintendent directs and participates in the maintenance of the golf course tees, greens, fairways, cart paths and landscapes; supervises the maintenance and repair of motorized and other mechanical equipment; and does related work as required. The assistant may serve in the Director of Agronomy’s capacity during his absence.
Responsibilities and Requirements - include the following but other duties may be assigned.
Assist in planning and supervising the maintenance of greens, tees, fairways, landscapes and all other maintenance practices required.
Schedules work and supervise the 2nd Assistant, Landscape Foreman, Golf Foreman and grounds crew on day-to-day operations.
Instructs equipment-operators on the operation and care of mowing and other equipment.
Supervises pesticide applications and/or operates and calibrates pesticide application equipment. Supervises and participates in the operation and maintenance of pumps, and in the maintenance of irrigation and drainage systems.
Assist Director of Agronomy in personnel staffing, management, evaluation, employee safety, personnel discipline and terminations.
Administers and enforces all Club rules, regulations and policies for staff.
Recruits, supervises and retains maintenance staff. Conducts employee performance evaluations and exercises disciplinary action.
Provides technical, operational and safety training for employees to ensure that staff are working within OSHA, club safety, state and federal guidelines for safe working conditions.
Supervises and controls all maintenance expenses associated with golf course operations, including payroll, supplies, chemicals and fertilizers.
Work directly with golf course mechanic on equipment repairs and availability.
Requires basic knowledge of agronomy and turfgrass management practices; A working knowledge of golf facilities construction principles, practices and methods; and a thorough understanding of the rules and strategies of the game of golf.
Requires a working knowledge of the maintenance of the golf tees, fairways, Greens. The seeding and maintenance practices for golf course turf. The planting, cultivating, pruning, and caring for plants, shrubs and trees. The characteristics and proper use of fertilizers and soil conditioners. Herbicide and pest control methods. Irrigation systems, including pumps and automatic controls.
Requires ability to schedule and supervise maintenance work to achieve the most efficient utilization of workers and equipment.
