The Periodontist serves as a practicing dental specialist within Dental Service - Central Texas Veterans Health Care System (CTVHCS) - providing a full range of professional periodontal procedures within the scope of the specialty. The incumbent delivers comprehensive oral healthcare focused on the prevention - diagnosis - and treatment of periodontal disease and conditions affecting the supporting structures of the teeth.
Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirement: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education: A degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are (1) United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) - in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed.(2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State - Territory - or Commonwealth (i.e. - Puerto Rico) - or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence certification - and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate - if claimed by the applicant. ~AND~ Completed - or you are currently completing - a residency program in general practice or specialty - or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients. ~AND~ Licensure and Registration: Currently hold - or will hold - a current - full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State - Territory - or Commonwealth of the United States - or in the District of Columbia. Note: Dentists must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active - current licensure. English Language Proficiency. Dentists - including residents - appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d). Preferred Experience: Advanced skills to provide a full range of clinical duties to determine the type of degree of illness within the dental scope. Advance skills and knowledge of dental practices. Working knowledge and in compliance with Safety and Environment of Care (EOC) standards and programs such as - MSDS Requirements - The Joint Commission - EOC Standards - GEMS Programs - and Infection Control Guidelines. Comprehensive exams utilizing radiographs - pulp testing - oral cancer screening - adjunctive medical laboratory studies. Comprehensive exams utilizing dental prophylaxis - topical fluoride treatments - dental sealants - enameloplasty - odontoplasty - athletic mouth guard/fluoride carrier - maintenance of dental implants. Restorations utilizing various filling materials dentures - partials - crowns - bridges - onlays - inlays - porcelain restorations - CAD/CAM restorations - valplast partials - treatment partials - obturators - sleep apnea appliances - TMJ splints - positioners - nightguards - equilibration - scale - root planning - curettage - soft tissue/ free gingival grafts - flap surgery - including osseous surgery. References: VA Regulations - specifically VA Handbook 5005 - Part II - Appendix G-3 Dentist Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: Light/moderate carrying between 15 to 44 pounds - use of fingers - walking for 3 hours - standing for 6 hours - near vision correctable at 13 to 16" Jaeger 1 to 4 - Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other eye - and the ability to distinguish basic colors; hearing aid permitted. Duties
Perform comprehensive oral and radiographic examinations related to periodontal diagnosis
Diagnose diseases and conditions affecting the gingiva - periodontal ligament - and alveolar bone
Develop and implement periodontal treatment plans
Perform non-surgical periodontal therapy - including scaling and root planning
Perform surgical periodontal procedures - including flap surgery and pocket reduction
Perform soft tissue grafting procedures - including gingival grafts for recession defects
Perform osseous surgery and regenerative procedures - including bone grafting
Place and restore dental implants as indicated
Manage peri-implant diseases and complications
Provide periodontal maintenance therapy and long-term disease management
Administer local anesthesia and prescribe medications as indicated
Manage periodontal emergencies - including acute infections and pain control
Interpret diagnostic imaging - including radiographs and CBCT/CT scans when indicated
Provide consultation to general dentists and other providers regarding periodontal and implant cases
Participate in interdisciplinary treatment planning
Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic health record (CPRS)
Perform other procedures consistent with the scope of Periodontics as required by the service
