This position functions in the Dental Laboratory. The Dental laboratory is charged with the fabrication of crowns - fixed and removable partial dentures - complete denture prostheses - as well as any special appliances as requested by the clinical staff.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position - applicants must meet all requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement - 05/11/2026. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements within 30 day of the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-9 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-8. The grade may have been in any occupation - but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year - it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade - as required by the announcement. In this instance - you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR): ALL applicants must meet the IOR is a basic requirement that must be met in order to qualify for the 0683 occupational series. To qualify for this occupational series - all applicants - regardless of grade level must meet specialized experience listed below: Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: Use of dental laboratory material such as impression materials - plasters - stones - hydrocolloids - waxes - metals - acrylics - porcelain - and similar materials. Use of laboratory equipment such as hand tools - dental lathes - engines - and hand pieces - furnaces - casting machines - presses - flasks - and related equipment. Use of precision instruments such as articulators - surveyors - and microanalyzers. Construction of dental prosthetic appliances. English Proficiency: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) - No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. In addition to meeting the Individual Occupational Requirement and English Proficiency - applicants must also meet the grade specific requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-8 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include - but are not limited to: Provide full scope of Removable and Fixed Prosthodontic laboratory procedures: Fabrication of stone models; Fabrication of impression trays - record bases and wax rims; Fabrication of complete dentures including - waxing packing - flasking - polishing; Fabrication of soft and hard mouthguards; Fabrication of acrylic RPDs including wrought wire clasps; Ability to fabricate porcelain (emax/zirconia crowns); Ability to add contacts and custom staining of porcelain crowns. OR - Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have have a masters or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full academic years of progressively higher level graduate education in a directly related field of study that demonstrated the knowledge - skills and abilities necessary to do the work. (Transcript required) OR - Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and graduate level education. For the GS-09 - only graduate education in excess of 18 semester hours (1 years) is creditable. Duties
Provide a full range of dental laboratory procedures in the areas of fixed and removable prosthodontics and in addition - many specialized appliances requiring advanced dental laboratory skills and techniques
Responsible for protecting that data from unauthorized release or from loss - alteration - or unauthorized deletion and following applicable regulations and instructions regarding access to computerized files - release of access codes - etc. - as set out in VA Privacy and Information Security training
Plans and revises laboratory production schedules - coordinates work with staff dentists and assistants - plans for enough supplies - makes recommendations concerning the maintenance and replacement of equipment and provides the Chief of Dental Service with workload and production status
Completes work authorizations to the satisfaction of the authorizing dentist to provide the dentist with a completed lab procedure that meets their standard of care
Communicates directly with the dentist regarding the dentist's specifications
Assures the security of all precious metals to prevent theft and unnecessary cost by continually monitoring any precious metals during the day and nightly storing or all precious metals in a safe placed
Accounts for all precious metals used by keeping accurate records or metal used - patient's name - and weight used
Maintains all lab equipment in good working order to provide uninterrupted lab procedures by monitoring the preventive maintenance program for lab equipment and immediately drafting a work order for any needed equipment repair
Prepares for shipment any work to be sent to CDL or another contracted dental laboratory
