Qualifications

To apply for this position - you must have the following qualifications: English Language Proficiency- In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) - No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. ~AND~ This position includes a Selective Placement Factor (skill - knowledge - ability or other worker characteristic basic to - and essential for - satisfactory performance of the job). Selective Placement Factors are a prerequisite to appointment and represent minimum requirements for a position. Applicants who do not meet it are ineligible for further consideration. The Selective Placement Factor for this position is: Experience performing phlebotomy/blood draws on human patients. ~AND~ EXPERIENCE: You must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-5) in the Federal service that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge - skills - and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position - and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience includes performing the following duties: a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical - microbiologic - hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field - e.g. - biological laboratory technician work - that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. ~OR~ EDUCATION: Successfully completed 6 month of Graduate education - or an internship may be substituted for the specialized experience. (Transcript Required) ~OR~ COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Must have equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate education and specialized experience to meet the total requirements. Education is creditable only in those instances where it is directly related to the position. (Transcript Required) Physical Requirements: The work requires above average agility and dexterity. The work may require heavy lifting of equipment or patients. The work requires extensive and recurring physical exertion such as standing for long periods of time - bending - standing - lifting up to 30 lbs. or more - walking - and stretching. The work requires some physical exertion - such as regular and recurring walking - or bending to collect patient specimens. In many situations - the duration of the activity (such as most of a workday) contributes to the arduous nature of the job. In other situations - such as in a laboratory - there may be special requirements for agility or dexterity such as exceptional hand/eye coordination. Duties

• ***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION - YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Duties included but are not limited to the following: Performs venipuncture procedures on ward and triage rooms at specified times - and in the venipuncture room located in the laboratory
• Performs complex procedures such as glucose tolerance - blood cultures ect
• Identifies and labels patient's specimens
• Processes send-out specimens for shipping to reference labs
• Performs procedures to include accessioning and preparation of specimens for analysis in chemistry - hematology - coagulation and urinalysis Inventory and stock supplies on trays and in the laboratory blood-drawing room and main laboratory supply area - as needed
• Performs clerical duties such as receiving incoming telephone calls - answering questions concerning specimen requirements and test turnaround times
• Recognize when either specimen preparation or equipment and instrumentation settings might invalidate the result
• Work Schedule: Full-Time - Monday-Friday: 7:30am-4:00pm Designated Drug-Testing Position: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment
