The School of Art at the University of Houston, a Tier-One public research university, is accepting applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the Photography and Video program to begin Fall 2026. The program seeks outstanding candidates working at the forefront of contemporary photography and/or video. The successful candidate will have an active exhibition practice with the potential to achieve national and international recognition and a developing record as a teacher and mentor. They should demonstrate engagement with contemporary issues and the evolving concerns of our dynamic field. We are open to candidates with expansive approaches to contemporary image-based creation, from analog processes to installation work to projects that utilize the newest digital technologies or extensive archival research. The successful candidate for this position will excel at teaching and mentoring students from a broad range of backgrounds. We are open to actively practicing artist-scholars who have a terminal degree, including an MFA or PhD, in photography or video practice or history.
Responsibilities Responsibilities include teaching foundation, intermediate and advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in photography and/or video, including studio courses for majors in the candidate’s area of expertise. Program and departmental service is expected, and the teaching load is 2/3.
Minimum Qualifications Terminal degree is required, as is an active exhibition record or other evidence of creative practice and its critical reception. The candidate should also be able to demonstrate skills and experience teaching at the college level.
Preferred Qualifications 1-3 years of college-level teaching experience beyond the terminal degree; familiarity with art history and theory; and demonstrated proficiency with foundation and advanced media software and equipment. Record of national or international awards, residencies or solo exhibitions.
