Under the direction of the Director of Research Administration, this position will provide school-level technical assistance in research administration (RA) for the SOMOR shared services research administration unit (RAU). This role will play an integral role in the School of Medicine (SOM) centralized pre-award services division as well as the implementation of the SOM Research Administration Training Program. This role includes serving as a subject matter expert on pre- award management for the School of Medicine, assisting RA leadership on pre- award policies and procedures, assisting on the development and administration of the pre- and post-award training program, which includes creating materials, updating training modules, and leading in-person sessions for the School of Medicine research administration community. This position will serve as the liaison between SOM and campus Sponsored Programs Office, serve as a pre-award resource to School of Medicine departments, and serve as a research administrator for contracts and grants with the Dean's Office or SOM Office of Research as their administering Dept.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Pre-Award Services - 75% effort: - Work independently with departmental faculty to create and submit proposals to various agencies - Provide independent RA services to Departments and Centers on high volume, simple and mid-complex proposals and projects - Pre-Award Duties: - Assist RAU Research Admin 4 analysts with their proposal load, includes simple (R03, R21, R01) proposals to mid-complex (ie. R01 with 1-2 subcontracts) proposals - Act as lead on developing grant proposals, includes: - Reviewing RFA - Meeting with PI and team to develop plan for submission - Creating timeline for grant submission - Create budgets for proposal submissions - Work with Institutional offices to ensure a successful proposal submission - Provide support on institutional compliance, i.e. IRB, IACUC
Training Program - 20% effort: - Lead the in-person training sessions for the School of Medicine Research Administration Training Program - 1-2 sessions per month, for an 8-month cohort - Provide updates related to training program as needed - Continuously monitor and update training program as needed - Assist with creating RA policies and procedures - Create and monitor training program metrics and evaluation when needed - Update digital media content (online training related material) related to the training program - Assist in developing content for quarterly SOM Research Manager's quarterly meeting: - Assist DRA with developing topics to present to group, create an agenda - Assist DRA with reaching out to subject matter experts to present - Schedule meetings, either in person, via Zoom, or hybrid
Other Duties - 5% effort: - Other duties as assigned by the Director of Research Administration or SOMOR leadership

Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
2 or more years of Research Administration (contracts and grants) experience
Experience with different types of award mechanisms, including grants, contracts, and subcontracts.
Experience leading diverse groups in the development and delivery of training materials.
Experience scheduling, coordinating and managing electronic calendars, meetings, projects and events with skill to reason and discern priorities when determining action.
Knowledge of pertinent federal and non-Federal sponsor regulations including, but not limited to NIH (OMB Circulars), the NSF and PHS Grants Policy Statements, Federal Acquisition Regulation, patent and copyright law, and cost-accounting standards
Knowledge and understanding of the compliance and sponsor policies related to research administration.
Knowledge of federal, state, and non-profit sponsor regulations, policies, requirements, procedures, and areas of interest.
Maintains knowledge of and skills to interpret and apply sponsor, institutional and departmental policies. Knowledge of current compliance regulations in all areas of research administration.
Familiarity of various institutional offices related to pre- and post- award activities, along with research compliance.
Familiarity working with grant preparation systems
Skills to interpret and communicate policy for others.
Skills and ability to attain a Certified Research Administrator Certificate or similar certificate within three years of hire.
Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to exercise tact, courtesy, and diplomacy when dealing with individuals at any level within and outside the Health campus and the University.
Excellent attention to detail.
Advanced skills to set priorities, meet deadlines, organize tasks in a complex university-community environment with minimal supervision
Preferred Qualifications
Certified Research Administrator Certificate or similar certificate within three years of hire
2 or more years of Research Administration experience, preferably in pre-award, proposal submissions
Experience working with Canvas in creating training program materials and tracking student progress
Experience creating training videos and other media
Knowledge of UC Davis grants policies and procedures.
Familiarity with Cayuse and SF424 grants preparation systems
Knowledge of the SOM Dean's Office of Research service units and policies

Department Overview
The School of Medicine Office of Research (SOM OR), with an annual operating budget of approximately $10M, acts under the direction of the SOM Vice Dean for Research. SOM OR manages research safety, grant facilitation, and supports investigators across the SOM and the UC Davis Main Campus who perform biomedical research. In FY24, the School of Medicine received $400 M in extramural grants and contracts. By supporting research administration throughout the SOM, the incumbent will play a key role in supporting the overall UCD SOM research mission by improving pre-and post-award administration and compliance throughout the school.
