This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval - award amount (up to $200 -000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position - you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine
The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
Current - full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State - Territory - or Commonwealth of the United States - or in the District of Columbia
Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training - approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification
(NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) - OR (2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) - OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States) - which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences
Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs)
PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e. - not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis
PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged
rather - they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision
Additionally - surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs
Proficiency in spoken and written English
Additional Requirement: Board Certified or Board Eligible psychiatrist Preferred Experience: Experience as an ambulatory withdrawal psychiatrist and/or in Addiction Recovery Treatment (ARTS) for substance use disorders

Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity (correction lenses permitted) - keen hearing (aids permitted) - and manual dexterity with repetitive computer work
potentially long periods (up to 8 hours) of continued walking - standing - stooping - sitting - bending - pulling - and pushing
light lifting and carrying (under 15 pounds)
The incumbent may be exposed to intermittent excessive noise - working both alone as well as closely with others as circumstances prescribe - and protracted or irregular hours of work
The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium - dementia - or psychiatric disorders
The incumbent must be a mature - flexible - sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations - able to shift priorities based on patient needs
Must be able to perform CPR per BLS protocols.
Duties
This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT and will remain open until July 8th - 2025
The initial cut-off date for referral of eligible applications will be May 15th - 2025 - with subsequent cut-off dates every 5 days

On-call rotations last one week - can be conducted from home - and are usually Friday-Thursdays - including weekends and holidays
The rotations may include discussion of potential admissions to the inpatient psychiatric unit - evaluating patients requiring seclusion and restraint - evaluating emergent psychiatric consults on the medical/surgical - and rounding on the inpatient psychiatric unit during weekends and holidays
Psychiatrists generally are on-call three to five times per year depending on site The VA Northern California Health Care System (NCHCS) is currently recruiting for a full-time Psychiatrist for the NCHCS Addiction Recovery Treatment Services (ARTS) team primarily to provide same-day addiction services to help support patients with Substance Use Disorders (SUD) - especially Alcohol and Opioid Use Disorder
The duty station will be at Sacramento VA Medical Center - Mather - CA
This position is on site and will be offering virtual support to other sites within VA NCHCS when indicated
The Ambulatory Withdrawal Management Psychiatrist works with ARTS nurse case managers to assess and diagnose patients
complete ambulatory detox - work with current ARTS Clinical Pharmacist Practitioner (CPP) to provide daily follow up until patients are stabilized
provide medications for psychiatric comorbidities as indicated
order and follow up with labs
and - coordinate care
In addition to same-day addiction services - the Psychiatrist provides SUD education to patients and staff
acts as ARTS liaisons to all other MH programs and medical departments
offers inpatient (med/surg and psychiatry) consults when indicated
and offers co-management with outpatient teams for complicated patients - including those that decline ARTS services
They will also care a panel of patients to ensure understanding of longitudinal care within ARTS
The Psychiatrist conducts assessments and formulates diagnoses
and develops treatment plans for patients with substance use and/or other psychiatric disorders - using an interdisciplinary team approach
The Psychiatrist manages psychiatric medication for patients
evaluates the general medical suitability of clinic patients for withdrawal management - detoxification and/or psychiatric hospitalization - including screening physical examinations
and assesses and intervenes with patients presenting in crisis
The Psychiatrist prescribes medications for the treatment of substance use disorders - including buprenorphine - as well as medications for other psychiatric disorders
Collaboration - coordination - and cooperation with colleagues within and across disciplines are essential skills
This Psychiatrist reports to the NCHCS ARTS Program Director and the NCHCS ARTS Medical Director
Psychiatrists may also have the opportunity for teaching and supervision of medical students and psychiatric residents and fellows through affiliation with the UC - Davis Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and the St
