Qualifications
To qualify for this position - you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine
The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
Current - full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State - Territory - or Commonwealth of the United States - or in the District of Columbia
Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training - approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification
(NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) - b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) -OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States) - which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences
Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs)
PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e. - not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis
PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged
rather - they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision
Additionally - surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs
Proficiency in spoken and written English
Additional Requirement: American Board of Radiology Certified Preferred Experience: 3 years of imaging leadership experience
Diagnostic Radiologist also specialized in either Neuroradiology - Nuclear Medicine - MSK or Mammography with at least 3 years experience in the specialized imaging area of expertise
Fellowship trained in one of the specialized areas of expertise
At least 1 year of Imaging Service Chief experience

Duties
Duties Leadership & Supervision - Directly supervises medical imaging health care professionals and administrative staff including - but not limited to - physicians - nurses - administrative leadership and supervisory technologists
Indirectly supervises all other Imaging Service staff
Allocates workload among staff based on position classification & other relevant considerations
- Leads the Imaging Service using High Reliability Organization (HRO) & other quality improvement principles - fostering a culture of teamwork - competency - productivity -& accountability
Ensures compliance with governing rules - regulations - & policies
Responsible for the overall atmosphere of the staff & healthcare environment
- Participates in various meetings & committees at multiple levels within the VA enterprise
- Collaborates with other Service Chiefs - program managers - & the Chief of Staff's Office to meet the needs of stakeholders
Consults with National & VISN Radiology and Nuclear Medicine leadership to achieve established VA Goals & Priorities
- Establishes plans & policies consistent with federal regulations - VHA Directives - & The Joint Commission standards
- Works with the Chief of Staff's Office to develop & execute a strategic plan & annual budget for the Imaging Service
Resource & Program Management - Evaluates current resources & demands to effectively utilize inventory - realigning when necessary - & providing justification/recommendations as needed
This includes facility space - equipment - supplies - & staffing
- Oversees the submission of new equipment & facility space requests - ensuring timely submissions
Collaborates with Engineering Service staff to facilitate associated activities
- Manages human resources within the Imaging Service - including hiring - appraisals - compensation - discipline - classification - praising - promoting - or dismissing
May delegate specific functions to Supervisory Staff or the Administrative Leadership
- Responsible for the financial management of the Imaging Service
- Recommends privileging requirements for radiologic - MRI - ultrasound - & nuclear medicine procedures based on training - experience - competence - & health status
Considers any information related to medical malpractice allegations - loss of medical staff membership - reduction of clinical privileges - or licensure challenges
- Reviews requests for initial & renewal credentials and clinical privileges - making recommendations
Maintains performance data on physicians & uses this data to recommend renewal of privileges - including competency review - personal workload - maintenance of certification -& participation in quality improvement activities
Functions related to radiologist duties - As a specially trained physician - the Radiologist assists the referring physician in the diagnosis & treatment of medical conditions with high-quality - timely interpretation of imaging studies
Communicates with specialized imaging staff and provides supervision based on qualifications & scope of practice
- Serves as a subject matter expert on imaging examinations & procedures for referring physicians
Makes recommendations in the diagnosis & treatment of medical conditions based on extensive knowledge of medicine
- Follows professional industry standards while protocoling examinations - prescribing contrast - medication - & radiation doses
- Recognizes & treats complications during and after procedures - including blood pressure problems - pain - over sedation - bleeding - or adverse reactions
- Participates in quality improvement activities & continuing education to maintain and develop expertise
Educates imaging staff on new processes - examinations - techniques - or procedures
- Maintains high standards for imaging quality reports any poor image quality or performance using appropriate control channels
