The salary range for this position is $66,737-$80,034. 'Off-scale salaries', i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions, qualifications, and experience.
The chemistry department at the University of California, Davis invites applications for a 100%-time postdoctoral research position in the Campus Mass Spectrometry Facilities (CMSF). The candidate will report to and receive mentorship from the facility director. Under the director's supervision, the candidate will manage the facility (including user training and instrument maintenance) and work closely with the facility director and facility users to develop and carry out research projects that apply the technologies available at the core. The CMSF specializes in the analysis of small molecules, peptides, carbohydrates, and oligonucleotides as well as intact mass analysis of large proteins. The major responsibilities of the candidate are as follows:
a. Facilities, Equipment, and Information Management (35%). These responsibilities include the following: build and maintain operational knowledge of the core facility instrumentation; provide expert knowledge in the facility's technologies; provide general training as well as advanced education to core facility users on the existing instrumentation and sample preparation; work with the facility director and users to keep the instrumentation and core capabilities updated; create, update, or make improvements to standard operating procedures and documentation for core facility activities; collaborate with users to develop customized sample acquisition and data analysis methods; troubleshoot equipment failures, procure repair parts, implement repairs, supervise field service, and test equipment for proper function after repairs; support the use and maintenance of facility computer systems and instrument control and analysis software as well as online reservation systems, quote generation, and invoicing; consult with users and investigators on project design and experimental set up.
b. Support CMSF's daily operations (30%): These responsibilities include: coordinating and managing equipment with facility users; performing or acquiring technical support for instrument operation and maintenance, including preventative maintenance; routine equipment management including cleaning, service, calibration, and checking the instrument for proper function; performing daily activities to prepare for experimental protocols and facility operation; adhering and contributing to facility safety, including responsibilities as safety coordinator for the core; manage chemical waste.
c. Research (30%): The candidate will have the opportunity to engage in semi-independent research under the supervision of the facility director, and may be driven by collaborations with various units across and outside of campus. The research component of this position will leverage the facility capabilities for activities that include: maintaining and initiating collaborations with both UC and external investigators; contributing to the progress of ongoing research projects through consultation, experimental design and implementation, and data analysis; remaining current on emerging techniques, software programs, and instrumentation associated with the mission of the facility; performing data analysis for researchers using specialized data analysis software in a form useful for further statistical analysis or publication; reviewing methods sections of research papers related to the core's specialty for publication; support the writing of grants either to update and grow the facility or to assist users in incorporating facility operations into their applications.
d. University and Public Service (5%): The candidate will actively contribute to facility activities through meetings and unit/campus presentations, participate in public outreach activities, and assist with mentoring graduate and undergraduate students or student interns.
