Assistant Project Scientist University of California Los Angeles
Requisition Number: JPF10225
Applications are sought for a full-time Assistant Project Scientist position in the Samelson Lab. The successful candidate will combine extensive chemoproteomics experience, protein expression, mammalian tissue culture, spectroscopy, and bioinformatics skills to understand iron and iron-chaperone distribution, function, and disease-relevance in human cell culture models of neurodegenerative diseases.
The Samelson Lab is looking to understand how metals, especially those related to electron transport or iron homeostasis, affect disease-relevant phenotypes, such as protein aggregation, mitochondrial dysfunction, DNA damage, and lysosomal dysfunction. We are looking to combine mass-spectrometry-based methods for assessing iron occupancy in vivo with proteome-wide iron-chaperone interactome maps and genetic modifiers of these processes using CRISPR-screening.
The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in cell and molecular biology, bioinformatics, metal-binding studies, mass spectrometry, and confocal microscopy. The candidate should have a strong team mindset to work collaboratively with geneticists, biochemists, and chemical biologists to design, implement, improve, and analyze experiments.
A successful candidate(s) will have the following qualifications:
PhD in Chemistry or Biochemistry related discipline
At least 4 years post graduate fellowship or experience
Ability to work in a collaborative interdisciplinary environment and experience in establishing new methods and approaches
Deep knowledge and willingness to teach others about the role of metals in human cells
Experience generating and analyzing mass spectrometry data, especially protein-protein interactions and metal occupancy sites.
Experience with analysis of protein-metal binding both in vitro and in vivo
Experience analyzing large protein-protein interaction datasets
Experience with sequencing, cloning, cell culture, DNA/RNA/Protein purification
Experience with standard molecular and epigenetic methods
Prefer experience studying heavy metal (especially iron) biology and an interest in neurodegeneration

The University of California is committed to creating and maintaining a community dedicated to the advancement, application, and transmission of knowledge and creative endeavors through academic excellence, where all individuals who participate in University programs and activities can work and learn together in a safe and secure environment, free of violence, harassment, bullying and other demeaning behavior, discrimination, exploitation, or intimidation. With this commitment as well as a commitment to addressing all forms of academic misconduct, UCLA conducts targeted employment reference checks for finalists to whom departments or other hiring units would like to extend formal offers of appointment into Academic Senate faculty positions. The targeted employment reference checks involve contacting the finalists' current and prior places of employment to ask whether there have been substantiated findings of misconduct that would violate the University's Faculty Code of Conduct. To implement this process, UCLA requires all applicants for Academic Senate faculty positions to complete, sign, and upload the form entitled 'Authorization to Release Information' into RECRUIT as part of their application. If the applicant does not include the signed authorization to release information with the application materials, the application will be considered incomplete. As with any incomplete application, the application will not receive further consideration. Although all applicants for faculty recruitments must complete the entire application, only finalists (i.e., those to whom the department or other hiring unit would like to extend a formal offer) considered for Academic Senate faculty positions will be subject to targeted employment reference checks.
