The Inpatient Transplant Physician Assistant is a clinical expert in the care of the inpatient liver and kidney transplant recipient. The PA has the primary responsibility for the day-to-day clinical management of inpatients on the Transplant Surgery Service. This responsibility involves coordinating the delivery of interdisciplinary medical and surgical care under the guidance of the Transplant Surgery attending physician. The Physician Assistant also functions as the liaison between the Transplant Surgery attending physician and the house staff, consulting ancillary providers, hospital departments, patient, family, community physicians, and insurance companies. The PA monitors transplant organ function and assesses pre and post operative patient condition for potential issues and/or complications. The PA actively coordinates provision of multi-disciplinary care within UCDHS as well as coordinating care provided by a variety of professionals within other health care systems. The PA coordinates the discharge plan in conjunction with the unit discharge planner, the transplant pharmacist and outpatient transplant coordinators. The PA provides ongoing patient and family education and assesses appropriate medical intervention for effective resource management and quality assurance.

California Licensed Physicians Assistant (PA)
American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) or UC Davis Health CPR
Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) number within 3 months of hire
National board certification as a physician assistant (NCCPA)
Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) within 6 months of hire
American Heart Association (AHA) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
Possession of a National Provider Identifier (NPI)
Graduation with a master's degree, or PhD from an accredited Physician Assistant Program
No Minimum Work Experience Required
Immunology and HLA testing and its implications
Working knowledge of HIPPA regulations
Knowledge of medical billing procedures and policies
Experience documenting medical records appropriately
Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language and utilize medical terminology appropriately
Knowledge and skills related to transplantation including care of the pre-op and post-op transplant recipient care, care of the donor hepatectomy and nephrectomy patient
Ability to independently set priorities, make clinical decisions and organize work in a high paced environment
Knowledge of medications, indications, dosage ranges, side effects, and potential toxicity
Ability to develop policies and procedures to meet program needs
Knowledge of performance improvement and research process
Knowledge of legal implications for clinical practice
Ability to assess educational needs of patients and provide education appropriate to the individual learning style and learning age
Ability to stand for extended periods while making rounds and evaluating patients
Able to work for 4 hours without taking a break
Preferred Qualifications
Ability to learn to assist in operations, performing tasks under direct supervision of the attending surgeon

Department Overview
The Department of Surgery encompasses a wide variety of surgical specialties. These include bariatric surgery, burn surgery, colorectal surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, hepatobiliary surgery, endocrine surgery, pediatric surgery, plastic surgery, transplant surgery, trauma, acute care and surgical critical care surgery, vascular surgery, and oncologic surgery. The Department's extensive surgical expertise, in combination with ongoing teaching and research activities, provide ample resources and advanced surgical techniques for patient care.
