The Opportunity:
The Office of Research (OR) at Washington State University (WSU) is a constellation of six primary offices and many supporting labs, centers, and institutes. Office of Research supports WSU's land-grant mission by partnering with the university community and other stakeholders to advance, extend, and apply knowledge across the full range of scholarly disciplines. Each office provides particular expertise in different aspects of research support.
As the Associate Vice President (AVP) for Research Operations, you play a key role in fulfilling WSU's research mission. As a key member of the Vice President for Research's (VPR) management team, you serve as an advisor to the VPR in a broad array of research strategy, administrative, compliance and security, and other operational activities. You work closely with Office of Research senior staff and supporting staff to carry out the goals and mission of the Office. Support the VPR in performing strategic short- and long-term planning for effective allocation and utilization of OR resources, including staffing levels, space, equipment, material, information systems, and budgetary assets, including strategy for omnibus and minor capital improvement funding. In the absence of the VPR, you serve as second in command for the Office of Research.
You are responsible for leading research operational and administrative initiatives across several offices within the Office of Research and for overseeing compliance with federal and state regulations, all regulatory bodies, and university strategic plans. Your direct reporting units include Research Assurances, IT, Data Management and Research Security, and Pre-award research services, including their budgeting, planning, and overall operations.

This is a full time (100% FTE), permanent position. This position is overtime exempt.
Monthly Salary: $15,000 - $20,833.33 | Commensurate with experience and qualifications.
In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.

Required Qualifications:
Positions require a master's degree in a related field and a minimum of eight (8) years of related professional experience in a complex organization, with preference given to experience in a higher education setting. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.
Proven ability and success in managing an office consisting of professional and support staff, exercising supervisorial skills to recruit, train, motivate, and address performance deficiencies and work as part of a team with colleagues
Familiarity with federal and state regulations and regulatory bodies that oversee research processes and in depth knowledge of federal regulations and policies concerning research compliance requirements, research security, including human and animal research, biosafety, export controls and conflict of interest.
In-depth knowledge of federal and other sponsor regulations governing grants and contract administration and pre-award processes and compliance.
Demonstrated project management skills; ability to organize and prioritize a fluctuating workload and strong financial management skills.
Ability to develop internal office policies and procedures and implement campus-wide policies and procedures related to research administration.
Excellent interpersonal and relationship skills, with the ability to effectively interact with diverse stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in a senior research administrative and operational management role in a major research university or related academic or research institute environment.
Record of innovation in leadership and management at increasing levels of responsibility throughout the candidate's career.
