Department Summary
The Life Sciences Core Education Department is the result of a cooperative effort by faculty, staff, and students from all life science departments to provide a uniform and integrated set of courses during the first years as an undergraduate. With total undergraduate enrollments exceeding 20,000 students annually, the Life Sciences Core Education Department is responsible for providing required pre-major coursework for students in the Life Sciences, Social Sciences, Physical Sciences, School of Nursing, School of Engineering (Bioengineering), and the undergraduate majors in the School of Public Health. The department also provides optional major and/or General Education Coursework to all undergraduates in the College of Letters and Sciences, and the Schools of Music, Arts and Architecture, Theater, Film, and Television, Public Affairs, and Education. Together with CEILS, (which is administratively housed within the LS Core), the LS Core is comprised of 24 full-time employees, in addition to annually employing 300+ graduate teaching assistants, 70+ readers, 200 learning assistants, and 40 instructors. Position Summary
Under the guidance of the Lab Director, the SRA III serves as Laboratory Administrator for the life sciences Core Curriculum department. This role encompasses researching new experimental procedures and developing new research projects for use in the classroom to further course goals, as defined by the Lab Director, managing the day-to-day operations of a large teaching laboratory. Additional responsibilities include managing lab procedures and experiments, trains the TAs, Undergrad Learning Assistants and lab staff. The SRA III is also responsible to supervise the set up and maintenance of all equipment and materials needed for the laboratory. Success in this position requires a firm grasp of the relevant research literature and be able to work independently with professional discretion.

1. Strong organizational skills to coordinate many concurrent activities by determining the time, place, and sequence of actions to be taken. (Required)
2. Skill in prioritizing assignments to complete work in a timely manner with deadlines, fluctuating workloads, or last minute changes and ability to demonstrate skill in performing repetitive work in a specialized instructional lab within set time constraints. (Required)
3. Demonstrated ability to work independently and follow through on assignments with minimal direction. (Required)
4. Skill in organizing material and information in a systematic way to optimize efficiency and minimize duplication of effort and demonstrated technical skill to care for and store laboratory equipment. (Required)
5. Demonstrated ability in experimental design, with a focus on ability to scale up experiments for use in a large academic teaching laboratory and anticipate potential challenges associated with teaching laboratories. (Required)
6. Strong scientific writing skills and ability to independently develop scientific writing assignments that meet course learning goals and strong understanding of pedagogy and ability to remain current with best practices in scientific education for the purposes of serving the teaching labs. (Required)
7. Demonstrated skill in using PC computer programs, particularly in the production of documents, spreadsheets, histograms, and preparing slideshow presentations and annotated handouts. And ability to prepare and maintain pure cultures of bacteria and to perform aseptic transfer of bacterial culture (Required)
8. Computer knowledge to access the instructional network server to download course programs to the student workstations as necessary; to determine the availability of hard disk space and RAM memory and the requirements of an instructional program needed for a particular course (Required)
9. Skill in management of University Administration Information Systems (AIS) to access campus administrative computing systems for student and course information. And experience in media preparation and PCR applications. (Preferred)
10. Interpersonal skills to interact diplomatically with various level of administration and Ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with instructors, staff, teaching assistants, undergraduate assistants, and students. (Required)
11. Working knowledge of chemical solutions and general laboratory supplies for the purpose of ordering and obtaining these items from suppliers; skill in performing chemical and mathematical calculations. (Required)
12. Demonstrated skill in using technical laboratory equipment to include: computers, centrifuges, pH meters, spectrophotometers, PCR machines, multi-channel pipetters, recorders, stethoscopes, scales, regulators, H/V power supply, autoclaves, incubators (water baths, shakers, Roll X) etc.. (Required)
Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations
Bachelor's Degree In Biology or related area / or equivalent combination of education and post-graduate experience (Preferred)
