Responsibilities
The Pediatric Float Team Nurse Practitioner role will include caring for inpatient pediatric patients across surgical and medical services, such as PICU, PCICU, Pediatric Surgery, Pediatric ENT, Pediatric Cardiology, Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, PNP appropriate patients in the NICU and additional services depending on staffing needs. The PNP will provide patient evaluation, ordering and interpretation of diagnostic tests, initiation of appropriate treatments and medications using established protocols and practices. In addition, the role will include: consultation with other providers; communication with patients and families; admission/transfer/discharge planning; documentation of care including routine notes and procedure notes. With appropriate credentials and privileges, the PNP may also perform invasive procedures (e.g., intubation, arterial and central line placement, GT change, drain removal, lumbar puncture, moderate sedation) within their defined scope of practice. The PNP will also provide education to patients, family members, and medical providers including nursing staff, allied health team members. PNPs may participate in the design and implementation of research and/or quality improvement studies within the Children's Hospital.
To provide independent advanced level nurse practitioner clinical expertise to patients and their families on an on-going basis. This includes the management of chronic stable medical conditions, routine care, acute or critical care, and medical and specialty protocols as defined by standardized procedures for your specific department. This may include non-invasive or invasive procedures per approved standardized procedures as identified by the list available in the Medical Staff Office. Patient management decisions will be independent where appropriate after assessment of the patient and interdependent with consultation with an attending or other member of the team. NPs are expected to act as an expert resource person for health care providers including nurses, residents and other ancillary staff.
Provides direct patient care to a diversified patient population. Applies knowledge, experience, and judgment to determine the importance of a situation, set priorities, and use abstract thought to evaluate clinical situations. Participates in patient and staff education. Demonstrates leadership skills. Demonstrates accountability for own practices as defined by the Nurse Practice Act.
Required Qualifications
Three or more years Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner experience in PICU, PCICU or Pediatric Surgery
Current AHA CPR/BLS and PALS Certifications
National board certification as a PNP-AC
Graduation with a Master's degree, DNP or PhD in Nursing from an accredited School of Nursing
Possession of valid California RN and Nurse Practitioner license without restrictions
Furnishing license
DEA within 3 months of hire
Judgement skills to effectively meet the needs of patients
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Self-direction and organizational skills to function in an independent role
Ability to cope with personal stress experienced by team members, other professionals, and caretakers
Ability to perform patient procedures

Preferred Qualifications
Experience as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner in a PICU or PCICU and Pediatric Surgery highly desired
Special Requirements
Physical ability and technical skills to perform a variety of medical procedures including lumbar punctures and bone marrow aspirations (training can be provided).
May be required to take call on nights and weekends as needed as part of the pediatric hematology/oncology medical team
Knowledge of approved abbreviations for UCDMC medical records
Ability to meet minimum standards for hospital credentialing and billing standards as a billable provider.
Ability to work flexible hours.

Ability to work overtime and work weekends and holidays.
