Department Description
The PACU departments are comprised of four PACU areas with 127 bays. Pavilion PACU with 63 bays, Children's Surgery Center PACU with 24 bays for pediatric patients, Same Day Surgery Center PACU with 12 bays and University Tower Surgery Suites with 28 bays. Specialized care is provided both pre and post operatively to patients undergoing a wide variety of surgical procedures from 40 OR rooms. Surgical procedures range from complex Trauma, Neurosurgical, Vascular, Transplant, and Cardiothoracic cases, to simple outpatient procedures. The units also provide specialized care to patients from ancillary procedure areas who have received general anesthesia. Patient conditions include: Preop, PACU, ICU, Telemetry and Acute Care level of care for both adult and pediatric patient populations.
In addition to the existing Preop/PACU beds, our ambulatory world is growing. This includes the building of one of the largest ambulatory surgery centers which will include 59 Preop/PACU bays, 14 OR's, 2 procedure rooms, and a 14 bed 23 hour stay unit. This new growth will be in addition to our other ambulatory sites, the existing Same Day Surgery Center and Pre-Anesthesia Readiness and Education Program (PREP) which provides pre-anesthesia screening and optimization for surgical patients. This role will work collaboratively with the current Preop/PACU Manager and staff to support our growing units.

Responsibilities
The areas of responsibilities for the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) Manager are shared between two PACU Managers and may include any combination of the Pavilion Preop/PACU, Children's Surgery Center Preop/PACU, Same Day Surgery Center Preop/PACU, University Tower 2 Preop/PACU, Surgical Admissions Center/Anesthesia Pediatric Center and other new Periop expansion. These departments/units deliver patient care through the provision and management of fiscal, material, and human resources, technological support, planning and coordinating surgical care with the medical and paramedical staff to effectively manage patients for surgical intervention. The PACU Manager is expected to work in a collaborative environment with multi-disciplinary teams including but not limited to surgeons, residents, and anesthesia colleagues.
This position is responsible for a significant operating budget and has oversight of a significant number of employees, approximately 122. Ensures adherence of personnel to departmental policies/procedures, regulatory requirements, and sets standards of care. This position is responsible for creating an organizational system that fosters the participation of Perioperative Services staff in the assessment, strategy planning, implementation, and evaluation of professional practice to ensure safe, efficient, and therapeutically effective nursing care. This includes organizational programming, goal setting, and policy development. The PACU Manager is responsible for the quality of care, competency of staff, performance improvement, and contributes to the development of institutional programs and policies. They also maintain awareness of professional matters at the local state and national levels that affect the delivery of patient care and develop unit specific performance standards in assigned departments/units.
The PACU Manager is responsible for the daily twenty-four (24) hour planning, organizing, directing, and controlling of the daily operations and clinical practice of assigned patient care areas, to provide quality, individualized patient care and support of Medical Center philosophies. This person will lead staff to model a professional practice environment by providing a clinically competent staff; encouraging strong interdisciplinary team collaboration and communication; supporting autonomy and accountability; providing staff opportunities for in-service and formal education; stressing the importance of continuous learning; and supporting a culture where concern for the patient is paramount. The PACU Manager assumes fiscal responsibility through preparation of unit budgets, supports research, participates in both long- and short-term strategic planning, and assures patient advocacy. This position is accountable to the Executive Director, Patient Care Services.
Required Qualifications
A valid California Registered Nurse License without restrictions
Certified Post Anesthesia Nurse (CPAN) or Certified Critical Care Nurse (CCRN)
Minimum of a Baccalaureate degree in Nursing. In addition, Master's degree required in nursing or other related field.
Minimum of 2 years of nursing management experience
Five (5) years PACU experience in a similar setting
Knowledge of ASPAN perioperative standards
Knowledge and demonstrated experience in clinical operations and fiscal management
Preferred Qualifications
Certification of field of practice
