The Washington National Primate Research Center has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Technologist 1. This position provides research support to Principle Investigators engaged in biomedical research utilizing non-human primates.
Under the general supervision of the Research Support Supervisor, this position provides comprehensive research support for investigators conducting research using nonhuman primates (NHPs) at the WaNPRC. This position provides an essential function by performing routine scientific work for research projects utilizing NHPs. Multiple projects involving different experimental protocols and schedules are conducted concurrently. This position requires excellent organizational skills plus the flexibility to work in an environment with constantly shifting and occasionally conflicting priorities.
Expected areas of applicable skills will be in performing experimental procedures on NHPs such as blood draws, administration of experimental and clinical drugs, minor surgical procedures and assistance with major surgeries, and monitoring of vital signs at the hands-on level under deadline pressure. Attention to detail in data acquisition and recording is also required. High priority is placed on communication and collaboration with other staff such as the psychological well-being coordinator, husbandry staff, and veterinary personnel for care of individual animals. Frequent interaction with supervisory and research staff is also required.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Research Support •Perform research projects including identifying animals and setting up supplies and equipment required to perform approved procedures and performing the procedures. •Prepare supplies needed to perform research specimen requests, perform collection, package and distribute samples. •Perform all standard research techniques approved for nonhuman primates according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). •Maintain the Research Support Services (RSS) email account and response to all client questions and requests; review of the RSS schedule; processing of sample requests and scheduling of the procedures. •Interact Animal Resources Division (ARD) staff efficiently and professionally with minimum miscommunications. •Sedate animals using controlled substances including placement of IV catheters, venipuncture blood draws and bone marrow aspirations. •Administer anesthetics (IV and inhalation) and monitor the animals’ vital signs and level of anesthesia. •Use established aseptic techniques to perform minor surgical procedures such as lymph node biopsies and skin and bone biopsies and their follow-up care. •Maintain and support complex IV tether projects. •In necropsy, serve as assistant to the dissector and perform various techniques. •Assist investigators in their tissue collection following their detailed protocols which may include preparation of tissue for cryopreservation, and various other media solutions or fixatives. •Complete and submit records of sample collections, experimental procedures, drugs and controlled substance dosages administered, and treatment room logbooks. •Record personnel time for re-charging to investigators.
Animal Research Management System Data (ARMS) Entry •Enter data of experimental procedures and drugs administered to animals on research projects into the Animal Research Management System (ARMS). •Assist with personnel time billing and UW Medical Center (UWMC) billing as assigned.
Clinical Monitoring (10%) •Monitor animals for clinical signs of disease, either experimentally related or spontaneous and reports to the clinical veterinary staff. •Administer research related drugs and clinical treatments as directed.
Record Keeping & Inventory Maintenance •Receive and keep records for Schedule II & III controlled drugs. •Maintain, sanitize, and stock supplies and equipment in procedure rooms.
Other Duties •Attend meetings, lectures, and training sessions. •Perform the duties required of Essential Personnel members in the event of an emergency. •Stay current on all required training. •Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:
Two years’ experience as a Laboratory Technician II, or equivalent; OR a Bachelor’s Degree in an appropriate field of science or technology. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
•Employment is contingent upon successful completion of health assessment at the UW's Employee Health Clinic. The health assessment may include but is not limited to tuberculosis clearance, measles clearance, immunizations such as tetanus and vaccinia, physical exam and/or review of work health history, x-rays, and/or assessment to wear positive or negative respiratory protective equipment. These health assessments will be repeated periodically during work assignment.
•This position may be required to work with and take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially infectious agents. Specific precautions may include wearing respirators and/or protective clothing. Employee is personally responsible for following health & safety and security policies/procedures, and staying current on all required training. Bloodborne pathogen training and compliance with all WaNPRC and UW security policies is also mandatory. This position involves handling nonhuman primates and human pathogenic organisms. The ability to work in an Animal Biosafety Level-3 containment facility may be required.
