The Department of Global Health was established in 2007, bridging the schools of Medicine and Public Health, with a mandate to harness the expertise and interdisciplinary power of all UW schools and colleges. This position will sit in the Global Center for the Integrated Health of Women, Adolescents, and Children (Global WACh) based in the University of Washington Departments of Global Health, Obstetrics/Gynecology, and Pediatrics. Our mission is to make scientific discoveries, cultivate leaders, and bridge disciplines to advance the tightly connected health and well-being of women, adolescents and children. Global WACh brings together expertise in maternal health from the Department of Obstetrics/Gynecology, neonatal and child health expertise from the Department of Pediatrics, and vast experience working in infectious disease, health metrics and evaluation, education, clinical research, and service delivery within the Department of Global Health. These disciplines combine under a methodology that views women, children, and adolescents as three populations interconnected along a shared life course.
Global WACh has an outstanding opportunity for a full time (100% FTE) Research Coordinator position. We seek an individual dedicated to excellence in research programs, committed to public health and invested in social justice, equity and inclusiveness.
The Research Coordinator will support the Enterics for Global Health (EFGH) study within the Gut Health and Child Survival team. The UW serves as the coordination center for EFGH, which is a consortium study with seven international sites. This position plays a key role in the coordination, management, and strategic planning of research activities, including regular communication with investigators and project staff based in Seattle and international sites. The Research Coordinator will support the operational activities of the projects, including but not limited to: developing and revising standard operating procedures and database systems, conducting data quality monitoring, generating progress reports, identifying potential challenges and developing mitigation plans, and responding to staff and leadership inquiries regarding study procedures.
The Enterics for Global Health (EFGH) aims to establish incidence and consequence of Shigella medically attended diarrhea across seven sites in Africa (The Gambia, Kenya, Malawi, Mali), Asia (Bangladesh, Pakistan), and Latin America (Peru). This position is the main research coordinator for this complex study and is responsible for ensuring standardization and protocol compliance across all sites
Research Project Management: •Independently develop study protocols, consent forms, case report forms, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) during the study start-up phase. •Coordinate and draft human subject applications, modifications and status reports to UW Institutional and Ethical Review boards; coordinate with the seven study sites to ensure local IRB approval and track all renewal timelines. •Oversee trainings and compliance monitoring including developing and formatting training material. •Responsible for understanding long term study objectives and ensuring study activities will meet those objectives. •Develop study logs, standardization logs, and systems to QC logs on a regular basis. •Hold regular meetings with site teams to discuss study implementation, identify areas of potential concern, needs for additional training or technical support. •Coordinate ongoing study activities and respond to project staff questions and concerns, including identifying operational obstacles and finding solutions to support study implementation according to protocol and procedures. •Serve as a knowledge source on the details of the protocol in order to track compliance and provide support to the sites. •Independently address challenges in day-to-day operations. •Independently identify potential challenges and barriers to study implementation and develop and implement mitigation plans. •Responsible for coordinating supply lists, assisting sites with procurement and tracking of supplies for all study sites •Participate in regular site visits to ensure study compliance, create feedback loops for study teams and PI •Other assigned tasks related to study coordination
Data Management: •Assist with programming questionnaires in database •Coordinate procurement, programming and shipment of tablets •Coordinate data-calls •Serve as a liason between data and clinical team •Coordinate repository of collected samples and data as needed Reporting and Communication: •Prepare reports and presentations for donors and stakeholders •Participate in or lead presentations as requested by the PI •Conduct literature reviews as needed
REQUIREMENTS: •BA/BS with 3 years of experience in Public Health, Epidemiology or related field •Skills, knowledge, and experience working in epidemiology studies and clinical trials
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
DESIRED EXPERIENCE •Master's Degree in Public Health, Epidemiology or related field •Fluency in analysis and coding with statistical software packages (Stata or R) •Experience with REDCap databases •Excellent computer skills with knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint (or similar packages) •Excellent communication and writing skills •Excellent judgment and interpersonal skills with proven ability for effective cross-cultural communication •Excellent organizational and project management skills •Ability to work independently •Interest in clinical research
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Primary work location with be at the Hans Rosling Center for Population Health on the UW Seattle campus. This position may be required to work outside of normal work hours to accommodate colleagues in different time zones. Some international travel may be required.
