The Department of Cell Biology & Human Anatomy at the University of California, Davis, School of Medicine, seeks to hire a Junior Specialist to perform research functions in the laboratory of Dr. Paul A. Sieving, M.D., Ph.D., to investigate the phenotyping of transgenic Rs1 gene mutant rodents beginning at the animal behavioral level and leading to tissue, cell and biochemical studies as this become possible.
This position will be involved in interdisciplinary studies focusing on phenotyping transgenic mouse and rat lines that carry a mutant gene that affects retinal function and exploring effects of the transgene on animal behavior and fertility. Studies are being conducted in vertebrate retinal development and behavior corresponding to human disease patterns.
The Junior Specialist will collaboratively and creatively conduct experiments on breeding and behavior of the mutant rodent lines to examine questions of behavior and impaired fecundity, using behavioral observational study and genetics, and extending to molecular biology and protein biochemistry of retina and other tissues of Rs1 knockout mouse and rat models.
Other general responsibilities include: reviewing journal articles and engaging in discussions on research and the interpretation of research results; participating and presenting in seminars at the local and at national research conferences as opportunity presents; reviewing research proposals, journal manuscripts, and publications related to areas of genetic retinal degenerations, mammalian tissue morphogenesis and effects on animal behavior and fertility. Other routine lab duties are expected. The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills in care of rodents, and have ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
Successful candidates are expected to participate in three major categories of activities listed below:
1. RESEARCH (80% EFFORT) The Junior Specialist is expected to work closely with the Principle Investigator (PI) to carry out experiments to investigate the role of Rs1 proteins in mammalian tissue morphogenesis and effects on behavior and fecundity. The specific roles and duties include the monitoring and breeding of Rs1 mutant mice, analysis and characterization of mutant mouse and rat behavioral phenotypes and learning use of immunohistochemistry of retinal and other tissues. Experimental findings will be presented in conferences and published as peer-reviewed research articles in recognized scientific journals.
The Junior Specialist is expected to gain a knowledge base of retinal tissue and cellular function and learn the role of Rs1 protein in rodent tissue morphogenesis, through laboratory interactions, and by independent study and literature reading. Through these exercises, the Junior Specialist will identify gaps in knowledge in the field, generate hypotheses, and collaboratively design informative and creative experiments to test hypotheses. The Junior Specialist will study and understand the rationales behind experimental procedures, creatively tailor the protocols to our specific experimental conditions. The Junior Specialist will also independently and creatively troubleshoot technical hurdles that may be encountered during the experiments. In many cases, the Junior Specialists will also be expected to design and carry out completely new experimental procedures.
With oversight and assistance of the PI, the Junior Specialist will outline and write the first draft of a manuscript, including figures and tables for the manuscript, and will work with the PI on revisions and modifying the manuscripts accordingly. The Junior Specialist will draft the majority of the manuscript and critically interpret findings in context of the current literature in the field. In the manuscript, the Junior Specialist will articulate the significance of the work and describe how the work helps move the field forward. Scientific and scholarly review of the literature will be performed through public databases, such as PubMed and other sources. The Junior Specialist will present research results in lab meetings, departmental seminars and other relevant campus-wide research venues.
2. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (10% EFFORT) The Junior Specialist will develop skills for oral or poster presentations at scientific conferences. They will participate in professional and learning activities in department, campus, and national activities such as career workshops. The Junior Specialist will be a member of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology or other comparable professional society.
3. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (10% EFFORT) The Junior Specialist is expected to assist with mentoring undergraduate students in the lab. The Junior Specialist will share expertise in mouse handling, care and breeding with others in the department and/or university.
Bachelor's degree in agriculture or pre-veterinary or equivalent science, with minimum of 2 years equivalent laboratory educational experience or a related field. Must have bachelor's degree before start date.
Coursework in biology, organic chemistry, genetics, reproductive physiology, and animal care and ethics, as these pertain directly to the work in the laboratory.
Experience working with genetically modified mice and rats, in breeding and providing medical care for mutant rodents, and characterization of behavioral phenotypes in mice and rats.
A year of work experience with the UC Davis Campus Veterinary Service, maintaining laboratory rodents and providing routine animal medical care, as the laboratory project will involve identifying behavioral disturbances and fertility of rodents that are housed and cared for by the UC Davis Campus Veterinary Service.
Have assisted with veterinary eye exams.
TERM OF APPOINTMENT: Full-Time (100%) appointment. Initial appointment is for 12 months (initial); reappointment is pending satisfactory performance, needs of the research project, and sufficient funding.
