Position Details: One regular, full-time position, 40 hours per week, 10 months per year, on the Oceanside campus. The work schedule is flexible and may consist of morning, afternoon, and/or evening hours. Some Saturdays and Sundays will be required.
This is an extended day position, subject to possible fluctuations in daily working hours, and may be exempt from compensation for overtime in excess of 8 hours in one day. Hours worked in excess of 40 hours in a week period shall be compensated on an overtime basis. The person selected for this position will be subject to assignment to any district facility during any hours of operation.

Salary Range: 28 Compensation: Starting $6,579 per month (range 28, step 1) on the 2021-2022 classified salary schedule.
Employees must make arrangements for the direct deposit of paychecks into the financial institution of their choice, via electronic fund transfer.

Basic Function: Under general supervision, lead the development, evaluation and refinement of scenarios for use in nursing course simulation exercises; set up hardware and software in classrooms and simulation labs; oversee students during lab activities and act as a resource mentor; and perform related duties as assigned.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities: The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.
1. Develop, present, evaluate and refine scenarios for simulation experiences for a broad range of medical situations, utilizing role playing, props, dialogue and debriefing to create a realistic and stimulating learning environment for nursing students; formulate new simulation exercises based on nursing curriculum and student- or faculty-identified needs and current practice issues; define learning outcomes and storyboard scenes, patient histories, lab results and doctors orders relevant to the scenario; prepare scripts for characters and simulation paths.
2. Set up hardware and software in classrooms and simulation labs as necessary; match instructor requests for mannequins with available equipment; schedule use of lab and equipment; provide orientation and advice to instructors on simulation laboratory procedures and use of equipment and materials; maintain mannequins and other equipment; monitor and supervise general cleaning of the simulated hospital lab.
3. Develop and recommend goals and objectives for the hospital simulation lab that support programs and student learning; lead and participate in faculty development activities on simulation-based learning.
4. Assist faculty with scheduled laboratory teaching; supervise students during scheduled laboratory periods; participate in the overall skills check off for students; follow up and schedule practice and retesting sessions for students with missed skills; serve as a resource mentor and work with students requiring remedial assistance; provide feedback to instructors on student progress.
5. Establish an open lab schedule each semester; schedule and coordinate the work of part-time skills lab instructors; recruit, train and schedule the work of laboratory assistants.
6. Order, receive, catalog and store instructional supplies, materials and equipment; arrange for the repair or replacement of broken equipment.
Other Duties: 1. Stay current on technical and educational developments in the field of nursing simulation.
2. Participate in department meetings on curriculum, student learning and student success.
3. Perform related duties as assigned.
Knowledge Of: 1. Principles and practices of nursing.
2. Learning theory and principles applicable to nursing study.
3. Current and emerging simulation hospital instructional technologies and associated equipment, tools and products, including high-, mid- and low-fidelity mannequins and associated simulator and computer equipment.
4. Nursing and healthcare situations and their suitability and application in the implementation of scenario-based simulation, web and e-learning applications and tools.
5. Methods and techniques in troubleshooting and resolving problems in simulation equipment, software and tools.
6. Trends in the development of simulation instruction for healthcare.
7. Written and oral communication skills including correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.
Ability To: 1. Apply sound learning theory and knowledge of real-life clinical healthcare situations to the development of effective scenario-based exercises for nursing students.
2. Plan and complete projects and lesson-based scenarios efficiently and in accordance with best practices.
3. Set up, maintain and resolve problems with simulation mannequins, equipment, tools and computers
4. Provide effective instructional support to faculty and guidance to students in subject-matter areas applicable to area of assignment.
5. Organize, set priorities and exercise sound, independent judgment within areas of responsibility.
6. Read, understand, interpret and apply department or district rules, policies and technical materials relating to assigned field.
7. Instruct or tutor students effectively to foster enthusiasm for learning; accurately, thoroughly and clearly answer students subject-matter, equipment-use and technology questions.
8. Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
9. Operate a computer and standard business software.
10. Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic and disability issues.
11. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with all those encountered in the course of work.
Education & Experience: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelors degree in nursing, and at least four years of progressively responsible professional nursing experience, two years of which were in a healthcare education environment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
IMPORTANT: For work experience, one year is defined as equivalent to 40 hours per week for 12 months, or at least 2,080 hours.
Licenses & Other Requirements: A valid California drivers license and the ability to maintain insurability under the districts vehicle insurance program.
A current valid registration as a Registered Nurse issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing.
Current certification as a Certified Healthcare Simulations Educator issued by the Society of Simulation in Healthcare or the ability to obtain certification within 3 years of employment is required.

Primarily sedentary with intermittent standing, walking, bending, kneeling and stooping; occasional lifting and carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds; ability to travel to a variety of locations on and off campus as needed to conduct district business. Work requires the ability to distinguish operating equipment sounds in a laboratory setting.
Emotional Effort: Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships involving interactions and communications personally, by phone and in writing with a variety of individuals and/or groups from diverse backgrounds on a regular, ongoing basis; ability to work effectively under pressure on a variety of tasks concurrently while meeting established deadlines and changing priorities.
Working Conditions: Primarily office/simulations laboratory environment; subject to frequent public contact and interruption; intermittent exposure to individuals acting in a disagreeable fashion; may work at any district location or authorized facility with occasional evenings and/or weekends on an as-needed basis. Occasional local travel may be requested.
