HMC is in search of an experienced Director of Sustainability. This position can be located at any of HMC offices including: Ontario, Los Angeles, San Diego, Sacramento, San Jose or San Francisco. Working remotely may be available within California.
Because HMC’s mission is to have a positive impact on the clients and communities we serve, sustainability (the integration of social, economic, and environmental value) is an essential aspect of our work, and the Director of Sustainable Design is a key leadership position. In collaboration with the Chief Impact Officer, the Director develops and implements strategies to ensure that our projects and practice align with our values and pursue the highest levels of performance feasible. The Director oversees or coordinates with a number of sustainability professionals in the firm, including one or more direct reports.
The Director’s time is divided between projects and pursuits (45-55%), firmwide strategy (25-30%), and marketing and PR (10-15%). Project work consists of supporting project designers with high-performance strategies, overseeing or conducting performance analysis, coordinating with key consultants, managing or implementing documentation for third-party rating systems such as LEED, managing or implementing post-occupancy evaluations, and client presentations. Firmwide strategy work includes developing, implementing, and maintaining policies, procedures, and systems to improve the performance of our projects and practice; these activities include overseeing HMC’s Climate Action Plan, the collection and submission of data for the AIA 2030 Commitment, and other initiatives. Marketing and PR include networking in the profession, public speaking, presenting at conferences, coordinating press with our communications team, and other activities to help build our reputation around our mission.
Education: Architecture, engineering, building sciences, environmental design or related professional degree from an accredited university, or equivalent demonstrated proficiency. LEED accreditation required.
Experience: Ten to fifteen (10-15) years of experience in leading sustainability initiatives, programs, or project strategies in an A/E firm or equivalent. (More or less experience is acceptable for exceptionally qualified candidates, to be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.) Strong proficiency with various performance analysis tools (energy, daylight, etc.). Excellent experience with multiple projects in leading, producing, or coordinating the process and documentation for LEED and other third-party standards. Experience with education, civic, cultural, and/or healthcare projects is desirable.

Responsible for speaking at 2-6 conferences or outside presentations a year to position HMC in the industry.

Meet with their personnel to discuss the evaluation.
Understand contractual liabilities as they relate to projects sustainable design work, including fee calculations.
Review and assist staff in setting budgets, goals, and preparing work plans that clearly define their expectations, and take appropriate action when they are met and when they are not met.
Review and resolve any issues related to staff and consultants.
Monitor staffing models to projected workloads to meet expected project timelines and profitability projections.
Integrate sustainable design principles with project design team and maintain design integrity through all phases.
Participate and occasionally lead design workshops.
Promote design quality and design collaboration.
Collaborate with project design team on sustainable design issues for programming, planning, and feasibility analysis.
Ensure that their staff support design and follow design intent on all projects.
Ensure that project design supports firm's design goals.
Responsible in collaboration with design team for quality of project design and documents, through all phases of projects.
Ensure that the projects have the appropriate design staff in collaboration with the design team.
Stays current with trends in the industry.
Does research on design options available in sustainable design.
Working knowledge of strategies and systems related to energy efficiency, daylighting, indoor air quality, materials assessment, stormwater management, and other common topics.
Must be well versed in non-residential Title 24 Energy Efficiency codes and other applicable standards, or ability to achieve proficiency within six months.
Must have a strong knowledge of mechanical electrical and other systems as they relate to sustainable design.
Experienced in the design and management of LEED projects.
Coordinate with government agencies, utility companies, and on sustainable design initiatives and possible rebates.
Write or coordinate green specifications.
Review documents to ensure quality, coordination, and compliance with the requirements of deliverables in all phases.
Ensure that client standards and HMC protocols are followed.
Provide training for staff as needed.
Guide and direct project team and consultants for appropriate materials and systems to achieve sustainable design goals.
Review cost estimates and conduct value analysis on sustainable design initiatives.
Perform or coordinate basic life cycle cost analysis.
Conduct product and materials research.
Provide sustainability program planning.
