| Jones Lab – Assistant/Associate/Full Specialist SCHOOL OF MEDICINE – Anatomy (Aging Research Institute) Description The Jones lab is seeking an Assistant/Associate/Full Specialist to join our group and contribute to new and ongoing projects. Our lab’s primary interest is in identifying conserved mechanisms that are involved in regulating stem cell behavior. To address such questions, we use the Drosophila male germ line and intestine, as well as human intestinal tissue and 3D organoids, as model systems. Once mechanisms that regulate stem cell behavior are identified, we evaluate how these mechanisms are altered by organismal aging and chronic and acute changes in metabolism. Furthermore, we are particularly interested in understanding how dysregulation of stem cell behavior is linked to degenerative and/or age-onset disease. The candidate will be expected to help in generation and maintenance of tools, perform biochemical and molecular biology techniques, utilize confocal and super-resolution microscopy, and be familiar with proteomic and metabolomic assays. Interest in mitochondrial metabolism and/or lipid metabolism is a strong asset. An exceptional candidate will lead their own independent project, develop new ideas, be familiar with the literature, and participate in writing of manuscripts and procurement of funds. Additionally, the candidate will be expected to assist with managing day-to-day lab operations, perform general lab duties and be a positive lab citizen. Required Qualifications:
• Excellent organizational and interpersonal communication skills (verbal and written)
• Willingness and ability to learn new methods and skills for changing research priorities.
• Ability to work independently and as a member of a research team.
• Ability to prioritize tasks, coordinate work tasks with others, and meet multiple deadlines.
• Must have (or be in process of obtaining) a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) in a Life Science discipline or five to ten years of relevant research experience to be appointed at the Assistant or Associate ranks.
• Must have (or be in process of obtaining) a PhD or MD PhD degree (or equivalent degree) in a Life Science discipline or at least ten or more years of relevant research experience to be appointed at the Full Rank. Preferred Qualifications:
• 5 years of post-doctoral training in genetics and molecular biology
• Experience supervising graduate students and other trainees
• Detailed knowledge of stem cell biology, developmental biology, cellular metabolism, and mitochondrial and/or lipid metabolism.
• Ample experience with Drosophila genetics.
• Skills in tissue dissections, confocal microscopy, cell sorting, molecular biology techniques, including DNA cloning, generation of transgenic flies, RNA-sequencing and analyzing sequencing data, qPCR, as well as protein and lipid assays.
• Proficiency in writing grants is expected. We are seeking at least a 1-year commitment. Depending on performance and workload, opportunities for independent research, mentorship of other trainees, and scientific writing will be available.
