![]() CUSTODIAN (Custodian) Job Summary Under supervision, responsible for cleaning all laboratory units, offices, student housing and various areas throughout the Veterinary Medicine Teaching & Research Center (VMTRC). Perform a full range of cleaning tasks, to include sweeping, mopping, washing, stripping, cleaning and/or polishing floors, hallways, corridors, walks, moldings, window and windowsills, walls, counter tops, furniture, beds, linens and other designated areas. Responsible for interior/exterior custodial work and laundry services for student housing units. On occasion strip and make beds, change linens. Pick up and deliver equipment and supplies. Responsible for grounds maintenance and irrigation systems. Maintain grounds equipment. Assist supervisor to perform repair work on building equipment and facilities. THIS POSITION IS LOCATED IN TULARE, CA. THIS IS NOT AN H1B/J1 OPPORTUNITY. Candidate must be legally permitted to work in the United States and not subject to revocation. POSITION INFORMATION PHYSICAL DEMANDS -Manipulate and/or assemble equipment. -Lift, push, pull, move and maneuver equipment. -Move furnishings, equipment and supplies. -Stoop, bend, walk, and stand for uninterrupted periods of time. -Lift equipment weighing up to 50 lbs. -Climb ladders and work in tight, cramped conditions. WORK ENVIRONMENT Valid CA driver's license. THIS IS NOT AN H1B/J1 OPPORTUNITY. Candidate must be legally permitted to work in the United States and not subject to revocation. Work outdoors in inclement weather and exposure to rain, heat, sun, mud, manure, dust, pollen, flies and odors. This is not a research position. The position is located in a research laboratory environment where quality control and assurance as well as meticulous working habits are essential. Restricted/Limited vacation during peak workload periods. Work overtime and/or weekend/holiday. All VMTRC employees must know and follow job safety procedures, attend required health and safety training, proactively promote safety at work, and promptly report actual and potential accidents and injuries. Must be able to wear and maintain approved safety equipment such as gloves and eye protection. This position is subject to medical surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy. Tolerate strong odors and the sight of exposed animal tissues and blood products. May at times, be in areas where biohazardous and chemical materials and infectious diseases are present. Specific hazards of the position are, but are not limited to salmonella, Listeria, E. coli, Campylobacter, hot acids, bases, ethers and other chemicals. QUALIFICATIONS Required: -Skills and experience to operate, maintain, set-up and dismantle a full range of cleaning equipment. Knowledge of correct application of proper equipment, tools, or material to a particular cleaning assignment. Skills with appropriate cleaning chemicals for various tasks. -Skills to understand, interpret and follow safety protocols, basic policy and procedure. -Oral, written, interpersonal and customer service skills to effectively interact with a wide variety of individuals, to include co-workers, clients of the VMTRC, individuals from other University units, and government/outside agencies. -Knowledge to safely operate mowing tractors, lawn mowers, power string trimmers, power blowers and other landscaping equipment. -Knowledge of fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides to use in a safe and effective manner. -Organizational skills and flexibility to determine workload priorities, respond to emergencies, complete work efficiently and meet project deadlines. -Familiarity with IBM-compatible computers and associated software packages, email. Preferred: -Skill to practice all security procedures related to unlocking, locking and securing of buildings and keys. -Knowledge of plants and planting seasons. -Familiarity handling large animals. -Familiarity with UC Policies and Procedures. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Background Check This position is a critical position and subject to a background check.
