UW Medicine Faculty Practice Plan Services (FPPS) supports UW Physicians (UWP), a practice group for more than 1,800 physicians and other healthcare professionals associated with UW Medicine. UW Medicine includes Harborview Medical Center, UW Medical Center - Montlake, UW Neighborhood Clinics, UW Medical Center - Northwest, the UW School of Medicine, Valley Medical Center, and Airlift Northwest. UWP members also practice at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, a partnership of UW Medicine, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, and Seattle Children’s Hospital.
The Manager, Coding & Charge Capture is responsible for professionally and successfully leading Coding and Charge Capture teams to maximize productivity and performance expectations. The position has direct oversight and accountability for the management of inventory, workload balance, staff development and mentoring, and quality assurance. The Manager has overall responsibility for all staff within the Department and directly supervises the Department Supervisors and staff with training responsibilities.
The Manager is responsible for ensuring that every team member is effectively, efficiently, and accurately conducting all aspects of their job responsibilities for their assigned team and payers. The Manager provides leadership and direction so that productivity and quality expectations are consistently measured and achieved and backlogs are avoided and promotes and supports a culture of continuous learning throughout the department.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES: • Contribute to high client satisfaction by building and maintaining excellent relationships with clients/ partners. Foster and maintain professional and effective relationships with UW Medicine and UW Medicine entity department leadership. • Manage charge capture and coding functions. • Oversee the quality assurance program. • Work with coding supervisors to ensure coding staff is knowledgeable and current regarding physician documentation, coding and reimbursement rules and policies. • Develop and manage staffing plans that facilitate efficient operations in conjunction with the Director of Coding & Charge Capture. • Solve complex problems through a cross-functional approach. • Work closely with Compliance, Insurance Follow-up, Clinical Departments, and physicians to manage production work and solve outstanding issues. • Provide timely, accurate, and professional responses to questions and concerns. • Manage and addresses multiple issues simultaneously. • Work closely with Compliance to identify training and education needs • Manages staff to established standards for quality and quantity of work performed. • Responsible for developing supervisor and team goals and objectives in accordance with overall department and facility goals and objectives. • Works with staff to ensure compliance of, and proper coding technique as defined by CMS regulations, Local Medicare Review Policies (LMRPs), Local Carrier Determinations (LCDs), the AMA, any applicable UWP compliance policies. • Provides ongoing coding education as well as new coder education on proper coding and documentation. • Reviews monthly coding denial report and charge lag, provides trending and implements solutions to reduce denial and charge correction rates. • Works with Coding staff to analyze claim edits and denials in addition to providing appropriate coding guidance. • Attends internal and external meetings, interacts with other managers to resolve problems, and conducts regular staff meetings to ensure consistent communication of Coding department as well as UWP policies, expectations, and goals. Coordinates closely with other Revenue Cycle Departments as appropriate. • Keeps Director informed of problems and challenges in the Coding Department. • Documents problems and handles complaints from employees, physicians, and administration. • Ability to provide adequate coverage of Supervisors as needed. • Perform other duties, as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS: • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, health administration, or related field required. Experience in lieu of education may be considered. • Active medical coding certification. (such as CPC, RHIT, RHIA, CCS-P, etc…) • 5 years within a healthcare and/or multi-specialty medical professional billing and physician coding environment. • 2 years progressively responsible supervisory/management experience.
