Lineworker

JOB SUMMARY
Installs, repairs, and maintains line equipment on behalf of the San Marcos Electric Utility Department; connects commercial and residential electrical services; maintains and/or installs electric meters and street lights; performs tree trimming; repairs and maintains rights-of-way; responds to power outages and/or other emergencies; operates and maintains various types of work equipment and tools; and performs other related duties. Rotates crews regularly, directs work of apprentices and helpers and works under the general direction of multiple Electric Distribution Supervisors.
 
The Lineworker works on all primary and secondary voltages.
 
Performs all duties assigned to a Lineworker Helper and Apprentice I, II, III and IV plus the following functions.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Provide hands on training, to Helpers and Apprentices, in safe and proficient work practices for climbing poles, framing and line building techniques, and transformer hook up processes.
2. Installs, removes, inspects, repairs, and maintains overhead/underground electrical lines and related equipment;
3. Locates and marks underground lines.
4. Performs switching of primary feeders.
5. Identifies and troubleshoots line issues.
6. Changes out faulty transformers.
7. Connects residential and commercial electrical services.
8. Performs a variety of duties associated with the restoration of electric services:
   • Troubleshoots and assists in resolving unplanned power outages.
   • Participates in restoring power services in a safe and timely manner.
   • Communicates with utility customers regarding electrical complaints, planned outages, and potential electric hazards.
9. Installs substation breakers and connections.
10. Operates various types of equipment including line trucks, aerial lift trucks, chipper trucks, digger trucks, and pulling equipment; cleans and maintains assigned vehicles; performs minor repairs and vehicle servicing.
11. Generates power transformer and substation switching orders.
12. Leads substation switching
13. Oversees supplemental contract labor and contract labor construction teams
14. Is required to be "on call" on a rotating basis or as needed to meet business needs.
15. Performs other duties as required.

 
DECISION MAKING

1. This position works under direct and general supervision of Senior Lineworkers, Electric Distribution Supervisors and the Department Manager.
2. This position directs work of lineworker helpers and apprentices as assigned.
