Health Sciences Services has an outstanding opportunity for a Senior Computer Specialist. Reporting to the Senior Director for the Executive Office of the President & Provost, and under the day-to-day supervision of the Director of Strategic Projects for Academic & Student Affairs, the Senior Computer Specialist manages the following: - Providing leadership in the planning, development, implementation, management, and support of network connectivity and security needs. - Administering Health Sciences Services Information Technology (HSS IT) network with multiple servers running Microsoft Windows Servers - domain controllers, backup, firewall, virtual and file servers. - Administering and supporting workstations (Windows 7, Windows 10), remote connections, and other network devices. - Acting as consultant for participating units, clinical and administrative staff, on all network and security related issues on the HSS IT service. - Working closely with Academic and Student Affairs (ASA) Information Systems team and other Executive Office unit IT staff to find innovative ways to optimize technology solutions for units throughout the organization. This position functions independently with daily operations. The primary responsibility of this position is monitoring and enhancing the operating environment to ensure optimal performance and availability. In-depth knowledge in the implementation, analysis, optimization, troubleshooting and documentation of various systems related to IT. Strong “hands on” technical knowledge with the proven ability to motivate project teams to ensure success. Will lead three desktop support technicians and be responsible for the management of the team’s workflow and priorities. RESPONSIBILITIES: Server Administration and Security •Research, recommend, plan, and install new hardware and systems, conducting strategic evaluation and provide advice and support for computing systems at HSS IT. •Manage system infrastructure including server infrastructure database development and maintenance, complex report development, testing computer equipment, firewalls, anti-malware/anti-virus and other software and hardware. •Assess user needs/requirements: Research, recommend and/or request products, hardware, services, and software applications. •Participate in testing and evaluating hardware products in planning for institutional standards. •Plan, develop, test and schedule server and desktop client software patches. •Manage, administer, and maintain computing hardware, software, and utilizing standard industry tools, management consoles and administration portals. •Evaluate technical systems needs and purchases of software/hardware. •Monitor the system daily and respond immediately to security or usability concerns •Create and verify backups of data. •Manage user accounts and permissions. •Maintain hardware and software inventory. •Maintain technical documentation of all systems for problem resolving and problem diagnosing procedures. •Assess, prioritize, implement, maintain, and enforce security measures that will comply with state and federal regulations (i.e. - HIPAA). Includes, developing and enforcing security standards, audits, and policies for compliance, and coordination of security investigations. •Analyze, plan, develop, implement, and maintain network security measures, including network monitoring tools, antivirus systems, firewalls, physical securities, and user training. •Establish and maintain security access to the local area network: oversee and assist in creating and maintaining user accounts, monitor network security. •Establish and maintain network trusts to UW IT and other necessary systems. •Analyze, plan, develop, implement, and maintain a disaster recovery plan. •Schedule and run routine network and systems backups and coordinate/maintain off-site storage of recovery archives. Supervision •Oversee operations for helpdesk and desktop services teams. •Manage ITSM and service level agreements to ensure all services are responded to in a timely manner and agreements are met. •Act as primary supervisor for (e.g. performance management, professional development/career planning) for desktop support technicians •Maintain a broad view of the organizational demands and available resources to facilitate planning and staffing of projects and services and leading skill development for the organization Consultation •Provide senior level assistance for technical support for both hardware and software issues. •Provide technical expertise and leadership for a complex department infrastructure. •Serve as a primary technical contact to the HSS IT team. •Respond to and resolve escalated and infrastructure related help desk requests •Other duties as assigned. REQUIREMENTS: •Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Computer Science & Engineering, Business Information Systems, or related field. •4 years of senior level support as well as management of IT systems and infrastructure. •Minimum 4 years’ experience performing progressively more complex and responsible tasks including design, development, and maintenance of multiple servers, preferably in a data center environment. •Demonstrated working knowledge of current versions of Ubuntu, CentOS, and Microsoft Servers. •Must have experience working in a virtualized environment, specifically Hyper-V and VMware clusters. •Must have strong scripting skills in Bash, PowerShell. •Must have experience working with data center storage. •Device Management systems such as SCCM or Puppet. •WSUS, MDT, WDS, Active Directory, GPO, IPv4, TCP/IP, VPN. •Provide excellent customer service by actively listening to customer’s concerns, effectively communicating options, respecting the customer’s decisions, and implementing them in a timely and cost-effective manner. •Commitment to continuous improvement in work process and efficiency in an ambiguous environment. •Cultivate positive working relationships with coworkers, management, customers, manufacturers, vendors and the general public. •Maintain a high level of professionalism. •Maintain accurate and timely documentation as required. •Familiarity with the ITIL foundation framework. •Ability to troubleshoot and maintain server hardware and peripherals. •Demonstrated communication skills and ability to work with personnel of various levels of technical background. •Ability to work with minimum supervision. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
