University Health System (UHS), in collaboration with The University of Texas College of Pharmacy, is pleased to offer a Postgraduate Year 2 (PGY2) pharmacy residency in infectious diseases. This 12-month residency is designed to provide a challenging training environment for individuals interested in developing clinical competency in the area of infectious diseases. University Health System is a nationally recognized teaching hospital and network of outpatient healthcare centers, owned by the people of Bexar County. In partnership with UT Medicine San Antonio, the practice plan of The University of Texas Health Science Center, it is consistently recognized as a leader in advanced treatment options, new technologies and clinical research. For the past seven years, University Hospital has been ranked the best in the San Antonio region by U.S. News & World Report. University Health System is Bexar County and South Texas’ first health system to earn Magnet status. Only about 6 percent of U.S. hospitals have earned this prestigious designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center — the gold standard in nursing care in the United States. Magnet hospitals and health systems offer patients reassurance they are being cared for by a team with a proven track record for providing excellent care and positive outcomes for their patients. The University Health System PGY2 Infectious Diseases Pharmacy Residency Program provides a challenging, well-rounded training environment including a variety of infectious diseases states seen in a variety of clinical areas, including but not limited to, general medicine and surgery, surgical/trauma ICU, neuroscience ICU, medicine ICU, oncology, HIV, emergency medicine, and cardiology/cardiothoracic surgery. Rotations include Microbiology Laboratory, ID consults, Antimicrobial Stewardship, and Inpatient HIV Medicine, with additional electives to include but not limited to HIV/HCV/CF clinic, BMT, Solid Organ Transplant and multiple ICU opportunities. Residents will have opportunities to care for adult and pediatric patients and teach and precept pharmacy students. In addition, residents will demonstrate leadership and practice management skills and complete an infectious diseases research project. Research responsibilities include completion of an individual major research project with presentation of results. Publication of results is highly encouraged. Residents also participate in infectious diseases-related issues of the DUE and P&T Committees and conduct an infectious diseases-related DUE. In addition, residents provide clinical staffing for the UHS Antimicrobial Stewardship Program. Academic responsibilities include pharmacy student precepting and lecture, case presentations, weekly antimicrobials discussion/journal club, attendance and presentation at pharmacotherapy rounds and pharmacotherapy seminar. Additionally, residents will have opportunities to evaluate their self- growth throughout residency.
