The Genetic Counselor works as a collaborative member of the oncology healthcare team to provide information and support to families who have members affected with familial cancers, are themselves affected with familial cancers or who may be at risk for familial cancer. Responsibilities of the Genetic Counselor includes identifying families at risk, investigating disease present in the family, interpreting and communicating information about the disorder, and analyzing inheritance patterns and risks of recurrence. The Genetic Counselor will provide supportive counseling to families, serve as a patient advocate and refer individuals to community and state supportive services. The role also includes serving as an educator and resource for other healthcare professionals and for the general public. The Genetic Counselor will be a participant in research activities related to the field of medical oncology genetics and genetic counseling.
The Cancer Centers of Sharp include three campuses; Sharp Memorial Hospital in Kearny Mesa; Sharp Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa and Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center in Chula Vista. Each campus offers an outpatient cancer center with a full spectrum of services including radiation oncology, an infusion center, patient navigation, social work and nutritional support services.

California Genetic Counselor License or California Temporary Genetic Counselor License required. Employees with the California Temporary Genetic Counselor License are required to obtain the California Genetic Counselor License within 1 month of hire date.
