Division of Developmental Medicine is currently recruiting for a Research Scientist/Engineer 3 in the Doherty Lab. The goal of the laboratory is to research is to identify genes involved in neurodevelopmental disorders and brain malformations and to understand the function of these genes during normal and abnormal brain development. The incumbent will perform specialized work in support of this research.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Job duties include but are not limited to: •Help identify research questions and design experimental strategies to answer these questions •Analyze multiple types of genomics data: exome and genome sequence, bulk RNA-seq, single cell/nuclei RNA-seq, methylation, SNP array, and others to identify variants associated with human genetic conditions and understand their underlying mechanisms •Identify, evaluate and integrate community-developed bioinformatics tools into analysis pipelines •Manage pipelines on a multi-node compute cluster using Python, R and other programing languages •Assist with supervision and training of junior staff and students performing bioinformatics analyses •Help trainees and staff members learn and perform bioinformatic analyses •Manage multiple projects in parallel including coordinating work by junior staff members •Actively participate and present results at our group meetings, and when appropriate, at scientific meetings •Contribute to presentations and manuscripts from the research group •Contribute data and draft text for grant applications •Help identify potential funding sources •Collaborate with peers within and outside our group to identify and incorporate new analyses into our pipelines •Other duties as assigned
REQUIREMENTS: •Master’s degree in bioinformatics, genetics, genomics, computer science or similar field •Three or more years of related work experience •Knowledge of core bioinformatics tools and databases •Excellent verbal and written communication skills •Experience with UNIX/LINUX and scripting languages, such as Python, Java, R, and/or Perl
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
DESIRED EXPERIENCE •Ph.D. in the related field •Previous experience with next-generation sequence data analysis highly desirable •Knowledge of statistical/mathematical packages such as R •Capable of self-directed research within broader goals set by group
