UW Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a full time, day shift REGISTERED NURSE to join our unique multidisciplinary Breast Surgery and Plastic/Aesthetic Surgery Clinic, located at UW Medical Center - Northwest. The Registered Nurse will support a broad range of patients, including patients with breast cancer, patients with benign breast issues, patients undergoing reconstruction and patients receiving facial and body-contouring procedures. This position carries the responsibility for education of patients and family, while acting as primary point of contact for patients, working collaboratively with their physicians.
SCHEDULE: The Registered Nurse will work Monday – Friday, 40 hours per week. There are no weekend or holiday responsibilities.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Registered Nurse will work closely with the surgeons at our combined Breast Surgery and Plastic & Aesthetic Surgery Clinic. The Registered Nurse will provide medical care, as well as care across the pre- and post-surgical continuum. The Registered Nurse will be responsible for answering and triaging patient calls and eCare messages, following up on medical records and test results, managing referrals, pre-operative teaching, and providing nursing advice in person, via phone and via telehealth. The Registered Nurse will also be responsible for proposing orders to attending physicians for imaging studies needed pre-operatively, and post-op orders. The Registered Nurse will potentially assist with clinic procedures, be responsible for pulling drains, performing tissue expander fills, and performing basic wound care.
High level understanding of oncology illnesses, perioperative education support, nursing procedures and treatment modalities
High level understanding of surgical procedures and associated complications, appropriately triaging and mobilizing resources for coordination of care
Ability to assess baseline and ongoing physical, emotional and social needs, assess patient’s adaptation to illness on an ongoing basis, an ability to conduct patient triage and assessment via the telephone
Ability to develop a plan of care to respond to patient symptoms and reactions resulting from the disease or the treatment
Monitors patient response to therapies, including lab values and symptom assessment, in collaboration with the medical, nutrition and pharmacy staff
Uses effective problem-solving skills in complex situations. Demonstrates capability to multitask with accuracy and deal effectively with unpredictable situations
Documents initial and ongoing assessment accurately per assessment policy
Documents all medications and treatments administered
Patient and Family Education
Maintains primary responsibility and coordination for provision of education required for patient and family
Communication and Teamwork
Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills
Collaborates effectively with physicians to provide comprehensive care planning for their specific population of patients
Serves as a resource in their areas of expertise for other staff
Demonstrates ability to effectively intervene with a patient in crisis
Graduate from an accredited school of nursing
Current license to practice as a registered nurse in the State of Washington
2 years of current or recent nursing experience
Previous experience in ambulatory nursing or phone triage
Familiarity with Epic EMR Software
