Responsible for overall operation of Pharmacy Department. Provides oversight and management of pharmacy operations and regulatory, clinical, business, and financial aspects. Collaborates with other leaders and hospital staff to determine needs, resolve problems and improve processes. Leads innovation and advance practice principles in patient safety and pharmaceutical care. Develops, budget, policies, and procedures to support functional infrastructure.
Manages and develops an effective staff: providing effective communication, leadership, guidance and resources. Determines staff qualifications and competency: recruits, interviews, selects, hires, trains, orients, mentors, evaluates, coaches, counsels, disciplines, and rewards. Establishes and monitors staff safety and regulatory compliance.
Develops, implements and maintains departmental and institutional policy and procedures: Keeping up to date with regulatory and practice standard changes, conforms to all current state and federal rules and regulations, Joint Commission standards, Colorado State Board of Pharmacy requirements, Drug Enforcement Agency regulation, as well as national best practice standards for Pharmacy.
Oversees efficient department financial operation through the preparation of and adherence to annual operating budget. Provides reports and action plans on variances.
Plans, coordinates and monitors the productivity of services and develops new programs and/or technology to increase revenue and improve patient care. Develops, plans and implements strategic goals of Pharmacy in alignment with organizational goals.
Negotiates and manages pharmacy-specific contracts: Evaluating new contract relationships, and renewal requests, including insurance/pharmacy benefit manager contracts. Responding to pharmacy credentialing requests, maintaining the NCPDP profile. Preparing for and responding to insurance pharmacy desk and on-site audits.
Assists research staff and sponsors in developing and implementing research policy and procedures and oversees management of investigational drug storage, preparation, tracking, dispensing and destruction. Sits on Institutional Review Board (IRB) as the pharmacy specialist.
Provides oversight and leadership of the 340B program. Maintains compliance and serves as the primary liaison and institutional expert regarding the 340B program
Participates in interdisciplinary Quality Improvement Committee activities: Initiating and reporting on departmental and multidisciplinary quality assurance programs
Advise satellite locations on policy and procedure, regulatory changes and requirements, and operations involving pharmaceuticals and/or pharmaceutical services.
Facilitates the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee: Arranging meetings, coordinating members, constructing agenda, preparing reports and documents required.
Performs duties of staff and clinical pharmacist, including being on-call as needed.
