Nature & Purpose of Position/Usual Duties:
Oversee and/or assist with coordinating programs for students, staff and faculty within the College of Osteopathic Medicine concerning clerkship education, including curriculum development, use of evaluation systems, accessing resources, clinical skills assessment activities and medical student clinical rotation credentialing.
Primary Responsibilities (Staff Positions Only):
Serves as first point of contact for all SHSU College of Osteopathic Medicine (COM) medical students for questions related to clerkships and required courses policies and requirements for completing the clerkship graduation requirements. Collaborates with the Office of Medical Student Affairs on exam accommodations and any issues students encounter while in their clinical rotations. Works closely with the Office of Assessment & Accreditation on collecting performance evaluations, coordination of COMAT subject examinations and COMLEX (Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination) Level II CE (Cognitive Evaluation) & PE (Performance Evaluation) signup. Coordinates with the Office of Clinical Skills & Simulation for Clinical Medicine activities, Professionalism modules, Interpersonal Evaluation (IPE) events and Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) training. Coordinates with the Osteopathic Principles and Practice Department for coordination of curriculum for years three & four and module completion. Oversees the medical student immunization and hospital/clinic credentialing process for clinical rotations. Develops and distributes announcements to clinical year students with up to date information related to clinical rotation requirements, changes to grading policy, submission of evaluations and completion of requirements. Manages monthly/bi-monthly Clerkship Directors meetings, Student Regional Meetings and Clerkship Coordinator meetings. Initiates agenda items, identifies information/research needs, develops meeting materials and minutes with a focus on outcomes, and follows up on action items for related policies and procedures for clerkship education. In conjunction with the regional Clinical Coordinators, serves as the liaison with SHSU-COM affiliated sites where medical students rotate and assists in the development of physician recruitment and outreach strategies. Conducts ongoing needs assessments of clinical faculty at SHSU-COM and other clinical sites (including Clinician Outreach and Communication Activity (COCA) driven action plans). Assists in budget management for the Office of Clinical Education budget, serving as a liaison between the Dean's Office. Works with clerkship directors and coordinators (e.g., communicates budget figures, expectations and procedures each fiscal year, assists with annual budget development, approves discretionary expenditures, etc.). Engages in Continuous Quality Improvement activities that align with the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation requirements. Along with the Director of Clinical Education, responsible for managing a systematic review of curriculum in the clerkship to ensure that the medical curriculum provides content of sufficient breadth and depth to prepare medical students for the practice of medicine and will have a formal role in engaging with the faculty on curricular revisions. Represents the Office of Clinical Education on key SHSU-COM committees and task forces, as needed. Manages the clinical coordinators in each of our four clinical rotation regions and provides leadership in clerkship education, including site outreach and development, clerkship process improvement and management of other clinical education initiatives. Performs other related duties as assigned.
