UW-IT is the central IT organization for the University of Washington, providing critical technology support to all three campuses, UW medical centers and global research operations. UW-IT has an outstanding full time opportunity for a Mainframe & Web Services Developer.
The Mainframe & Web Services Developer develops, implements and supports major information systems at the University of Washington. The technical environment includes mainframe, web-based and cloud technologies. This involves development and maintenance of University specific software. The incumbent will work in a diverse, mission-critical suite of application software of varying ages and technologies in the Student Program.
The Student systems include the Unisys mainframe computing environment comprising of batch programs and online modules coded in Cobol 85. Other applications are written primarily in .Net and Java. We are seeking an individual who can collaborate on complex projects and can quickly climb the learning curve to understand and support custom UW Cobol, web and cloud applications.
The Mainframe & Web Services Developer participates in all aspects of the software development lifecycle. This includes definition, specification, architecture, design, programming, testing, documentation, quality assurance, implementation, maintenance and production support for distributed applications, databases, Web services, enterprise middleware and system interfaces across multiple computing platforms. The Mainframe and Web Services Developer is technically competent, has extensive knowledge and working experience in all aspects of application development, communicates effectively, and is able to work both independently and as part of a team collaborating on complex projects.
Successful candidate in this role is a seasoned software developer who has a proven track record of designing, coding and releasing large software products and services.
Demonstrated skills in active learning and using different programming languages.
Demonstrated knowledge and skills in debugging, understanding and maintaining software developed in house.).
Demonstrated knowledge and skills in building backend services and UI.
Demonstrated knowledge and working experience with DevOps and SDLC.
Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related field or equivalent experience.
Minimum of four years’ experience with COBOL and mainframe database management systems.
Experience in building, integrating and supporting software solutions and systems.
Demonstrated ability to develop creative solutions for business and research needs.
Demonstrated ability to work in a professional manner in a fast-paced, highly collaborative team environment, across different application areas and with different client and technical teams. .
Proficient in Dev-ops and all aspects of the software development life cycle.
Ability to quickly learn and apply new technologies and skills is essential.
Demonstrated expert knowledge, or certification in, a wide range of enterprise architecture methodologies, technologies and tools.
Advanced knowledge and skills in developing backend APIs and web services.
Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision
Demonstrated excellent written/oral communication skills, technical documentation skills, user liaison skills, and personal interaction abilities.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements such as license/certification/registration.
Knowledge and experience with Java, C#, .NET, XML, SQL/MySQL.
Knowledge and experience with WFL, DMS II, CANDE, and COBOL85 in the Unisys MCP mainframe environment.
Experience with Cloud technologies like Terraform, containers and lambdas.
Experience with Agile/Scrum development methodologies.
Experience with software architecture patterns (e.g. MVC)
Experience working at a large research or academic institution
