The Department of Microbiology and Immunology is seeking an Animal Care Assistant I to assist in maintaining a gnotobiotic mouse facility. Primary responsibilities include mouse husbandry, breeding, maintaining cages, and record keeping. In addition, the Animal Care Assistant will be responsible for cleaning equipment and the facility; building, modifying, and sterilizing gnotobiotic isolators and other supplies. Anticipating potential issues at an early stage before critical problems arise and assessing a situation and taking the appropriate action with minimal guidance are also expected.
This position is represented by SEIU Local 2007 and the collective bargainingagreement between the university and SEIU Local 2007 governs the terms and conditions of employment.
At least one of the following is required:
(i) 2-4 year degree in a biological science discipline.
(ii) one to two years of laboratory research experience, and/or
(iii) ALAT certification.
Some knowledge of basic mouse husbandry is required. The ideal candidate will be able to attain a high degree of independence in helping maintain the mouse colony and gnotobiotic facility. Candidate will need to demonstrate aptitudes in foresight, planning and ability to organize and schedule the many tasks associated with running a gnotobiotic mouse facility. Meticulous attention to detail is vital. The ability to communicate clearly, work independently, think critically, and receptive to take guidance are essential. Some ability to build and assemble equipment is desired. Understanding the principals of sterilization is a key facet of the position. In addition, the ideal candidate will have the ability to work independently and in collaboration with others. Must be able to lift 50 lbs and can stand for extended amounts of time.
