This position is split between the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies, or CNS (50%) and MIIS Recruiting (50%). The position is full-time (37.5 hours/week) and term-limited to three years, with a possibility for renewal at that time contingent on funding availability. The Research Associate position is at CNS. Under the supervision of the Deputy Director, CNS, the Research Associate will assist in the operations and implementation of activities tasked to and performed at CNS, as described in the duties below. The recruiting position is a part of the MIIS student recruitment team and is responsible for school-wide student recruitment activities for the MA Nonproliferation and Terrorism Studies program, including achieving institutional enrollment objectives. Recruiting activities include, but are not limited to, telephone and email correspondence with prospective students, referral generation, participation in education expos, advising prospective students and applicants, and yield management.
Research Associate, CNS (50%) Conduct original research and write reports and scholarly articles on the proliferation of nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons, their means of delivery and strategies for control. Organize and execute seminars, meetings, and outreach activities related to nonproliferation issues, and especially the Treaty on the Nonproliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). Perform related administrative tasks as required. Manage discrete components of grant-funded nonproliferation projects (including training and supervising graduate research assistants) as requested and required. Enrollment Manager (50%) Customer Relationship Management and prospect/lead processing o Manage all conversion activities for assigned prospects throughout the enrollment cycle and admissions process (initial contact, enrollment advisement meetings, telephone and email follow-up, online chats, targeted pushes, hospitality weekends, etc.). o Follow the MIIS Recruitment guidelines to insure outstanding service to all prospective students including careful tracking of all initial lead sources. o Work with alumni and current students to actively identify qualified prospects to add to the MIIS student database. Work with manager to develop and implement a personal referral strategy. o Represent MIIS through presentations at on-campus events, fairs, receptions, public forums and tours. o Active involvement in marketing planning process, segmenting prospective leads in promotional events, providing support for all areas of the plan including strategy, volume, best practice sharing, and application projections. o Initiate and maintain productive working relationships with other departments who are influential to prospective student application decisions. o Coordinate with Admissions staff to ensure seamless transition from prospective student to applicant status. o Assist in yielding admitted students. o Identifying and making initial outreach to schools or departments as potential partners with the goal of creating pipelines for applicants and enrollments for the NPTS program.
O Travel (primarily domestic and possibly international), for the recruiting position. o Manage or assist on projects as assigned. o Serve on institutional task force committees as assigned.
MA Nonproliferation and Terrorism Studies from MIIS or other MA degree with a concentration in nonproliferation studies required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Capable of multi-tasking and working in a challenging, intense, and dynamic environment Detail-oriented, well-organized and capable of completing deliverables on tight deadlines. Familiarity with standard citation and editing styles (e.g. Chicago Manual of Style). Ability to manage work of graduate students. Willingness and ability to adapt to changing technologies and systems. Familiarity with web-based social networking tools. Willingness and ability to comply with Institute policies, procedures, and mandates. Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills. Excellent presentation skills. Excellent analytical, research, and editing skills. Good understanding of nuclear proliferation, nuclear safeguards, international treaties and organizations. Native or near-native fluency in English is required. Proficiency in a second language required. Familiarity with social networking sites, such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. Ability to read and develop written correspondence and good oral communication with prospective students. Ability to develop and deliver presentations to individuals and groups during marketing and recruitment events and/or tours. Strong interpersonal / communication skills. Proficiency with PC applications such as MS Word, Excel, Power Point. Experience with or willing to learn contact management systems (e.g., Salesforce). Willing to travel and work occasional weekends. Team player, assertive, adaptable, professional. Valid driver's license.
1-2 years of experience in the nonproliferation field
The Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey maintains a smoke-free workplace and complies with the Federal Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act and Drug-Free Workplace Act. The position requires moderate-to-heavy physical exertion. Essential job functions require ability to sit for extended periods of time, walk, bend, climb, push/pull, lift and carry up to 25 pounds occasionally. Also requires fine dexterity and ability to grasp, i.e. for writing and word processing/data entry.
