Position Description: The Center for Improving Child Care Quality (CICCQ) conducts high-quality research with a focus on improving the early care and education environments of young children at local, state, and national levels. Housed within UCLA's Graduate School of Education & Information Studies (GSE&IS), CICCQ has been collaborating with faculty at UCLA and other universities, school districts, and community agencies in research and evaluation for over 20 years.
The ERS Specialist maintains a high level of conceptual understanding and technical application of the Environment Rating Scale (ERS) suite of measures (Family Child Care ERS [FCCERS], Infant Toddler ERS [ITERS], and Early Childhood ERS [ECERS] versions) to review and assess ERS data collected by other CICCQ staff. Responsibilities include applying knowledge of the measures to review notes and observation data and, in collaboration with the Training Coordinator, support data collectors' understanding of how to apply the concepts of the ERS to write notes based on observations. The ERS Specialist provides ongoing feedback to other data collectors about their ERS notes, helps answer questions about how to apply the measures to specific situations encountered in the field, and assists with supervising data processing, including database approvals.
This role provides a critical link between CICCQ research staff and the program participants who are the recipients of the notes. The ERS Specialist engages in ongoing communication with the rest of the CICCQ data collection team regarding individual ERS assessments to ensure validity, accuracy, and clarity of scoring. This position supports the Center management team by providing regular, detailed feedback to the project supervisors about the data collectors' performance in using the ERS measures. The Specialist makes recommendations for continuing education and training on the ERS, and works with the Training Coordinator to create reference materials and training schedules to support the ERS measurements. Additionally, the ERS Specialist may independently, or with a partner, travel to family childcare homes, schools, and other childcare settings to observe and assess programs and teacher-child interactions, on an as-needed basis.
