The Natural Reserves in the Division of Physical & Biological Sciences at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a part-time Field Technician. Under the direction of Becca Fenwick, the Field Technician will be participate in the development of an experimental and monitoring research design that will look at the movement of water through ecosystems in order to provide with greater accuracy forecasts of the state's water supply. Working with the team, the Field Technician will also be responsible for the deployment, testing, and year-round running and maintenance of wireless sensor networks across six UCNRS reserves. Each site will consist of 20+ nodes with numerous environmental sensors attached to each node. A deep understanding of environmental sensor design, functionality, and the greater research concerns are required for this position.
The incumbent will select the appropriate sensors, work in partnership with the faculty and postdoctoral scholar on the experimental design, and work with data acquisition to troubleshoot the networks as required. The Field Technician will be part of a multi-campus team, led by the PI and co-PIs at UCOP, UCB, and UCSC, along with a postdoctoral scholar, data manager, and software developer at UCB. The selected applicant will possess the desire and ability to work independently while on site, and in collaboration with the other members of the research team.
The research protocol is to survey the six locations at least four times per year for three years using UAVs (drones) with associated campaign sensor deployment. The ability to learn to pilot various types of drones (training will be provided) and to assist with the implementation and interpretation of the survey data is critical to the position.
This research program will generate many different types of time series environmental data, multispectral ground based images, and multispectral drone-based imagery. All these data will all be managed, archived, and made available through the UCB Dendra interface; thus, familiarity with these data types, the QA/QC process, and the ability to learn quickly the Dendra interface is essential.
The identified sites are geographically spread out across California and the Field Technician will work in remote locations for extended periods of time. The incumbent must possess (or readily obtain) a valid California driving license in order to travel frequently across the state.
Applicants with the following qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply: expertise in environmental sensor design and/or a PhD in environmental science, ecology, or any of the life sciences.
