Established on July 1, 2018, the Department of Health Metrics Sciences is the world's first academic department devoted to the science of health metrics. The Department of Health Metrics Sciences and the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation within the School of Medicine at the University of Washington are recruiting to fill one full-time faculty position at the Assistant Professor without tenure (WOT) level. Anticipated start is July 2020.
The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) is an independent research organization that produces cutting-edge scientific and policy-relevant quantitative evidence for use by policymakers, donors, and other stakeholders. Based at the University of Washington, IHME's ongoing work provides high-quality measurement of the world's major health problems, assesses how these problems are being addressed, and identifies how best to dedicate resources to maximize health improvement. IHME's approach maximizes cross-disciplinary, quantitative analytic approaches and methods aimed at incorporating all relevant data in order to produce policy-relevant results using ground-breaking science.
About the Position
The incumbent will lead the Cancer Team for the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study. The GBD study currently produces estimates of incidence, prevalence, and deaths for 29 types of cancer from 1990 to present. The incumbent will assess all available relevant quantitative data – including those on causes of death, epidemiology, and a range of determinants such as education and income – from cancer registries, surveys, vital registration systems, scientific literature, and administrative records. The incumbent will need to become familiar with global and national patterns in cancer epidemiology, including fatal and nonfatal outcomes. The incumbent will use modeling tools to produce estimates on an annually updated basis. Duties will include modeling of causes of death, non-fatal health outcomes, and risk factor exposures using data from a multitude of sources and applying complex algorithms in novel statistical applications developed at IHME. This will include generation and critique of these results in light of trends in the available data and epidemiological and clinical assumptions where appropriate, determine whether adjustments to models or model assumptions should be made, and analyze results in consultation with other faculty. Incumbent is expected to present the results both internally and externally and to contribute to appropriate peer reviewed journal articles and policy reports pertaining to them. The incumbent is expected to contribute to the expansion of cancer elimination research for the Institute, including but not limited to consultation with cancer epidemiologists around the world, engagement with external partners, and the expansion of the network of collaborators.
Faculty members will also take on an important leadership role in mentoring predoctoral and postdoctoral fellows working in the field of health metrics. All University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research, and service. Salary and benefits are competitive and commensurate with experience.
Assistant Professors in the Department of Health Metrics Sciences have an annual service period of 12 months (July 1– June 30). Faculty appointed WOT do not hold tenure because all or part of their annual University-administered salary is derived from sources other than regularly appropriated state funds. Except for this distinction, WOT faculty members have the same rights, responsibilities, and obligations as tenure-track and tenured faculty members at those ranks.
The successful applicants will have an MD, PhD, or foreign equivalent in medicine, epidemiology, population health, biostatistics, statistics, health informatics, health economics, health policy, or other relevant subject. The successful applicant will have a proven record of quantitative research in a health-related field including statistical modeling using multiple and large data sets. Demonstrated ability to code in R is required. Demonstrated success in modeling in one more programming languages in addition to R, such as Stata, Python is required.
In order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduates of foreign (non-U.S,) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
