| KERN MEDICAL Kern Medical Healthcare System, located in Bakersfield, CA is a 222-bed level-2 trauma center providing comprehensive healthcare. Along with the Sagebrush, Truxtun Ave, Stockdale Hwy, 34th Street, and Eye Street outpatient clinics we deliver healthcare the citizens of Kern County. Kern Medical Center has established a primary care clinic based on managed care principles of health promotion and disease prevention. Through these new programs, we are moving from the traditional inpatient setting to an emphasis on outpatient care delivery thus increasing staff efficiency and patient satisfaction. Scope of Services KMC is a level-2 trauma center that performs over 5,500 surgeries, delivers over 5,600 babies and dispenses approximately 750,000 prescriptions in a typical year. Kern Medical Pharmacy Residency is accredited by American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). PGY-1 Program Purpose: PGY-1 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training. Furthermore, the PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency at Kern Medical exists to develop the professional pharmacist who can thrive in a health care system where change is inevitable. The Resident will become well-grounded in current high standards of patient care and medication management but will have the capability and desire to continually educate both self and others. The Resident will gain experience in collaborating with other health care professionals to manage individual patients and to increase the safety of medication use within the system. The Resident will be sensitive to the culturally diverse population that defines the patient base of Kern Medical. At the completion of the residency, the pharmacist will be well prepared to assume increasing responsibility in a variety of positions including, but limited to, inpatient pharmacist, clinical pharmacist, and ambulatory care pharmacist RESIDENCY DESIGN Required and Elective Learning Experiences: Structured learning experiences spread throughout a 12 month period are utilized to facilitate the achievement of the program outcomes. Within each structured experience, learning activities have been developed which allow the resident to meet the program’s goals and objectives. The program is flexible to meet individual needs of residents. Residents are encouraged to develop areas of interest and become involved in all pharmacy activities. Prior to each learning experience, the resident will discuss their goals with the preceptor so as to provide an opportunity for the preceptor to evaluate and, if possible, design specific activities to meet the resident’s goals. Activities and expectations to achieve the goals and objectives identified for each learning experience have been developed by each preceptor and are shared with the resident at the beginning of each experience. Mandatory rotational learning experiences with minimum lengths: Orientation (3 weeks) Ambulatory Care (6 weeks) Internal medicine (6 weeks) Infectious Disease (6 weeks) Critical Care (6 weeks) Advanced Internal Medicine (4 weeks) Administration (6 weeks) Hospital Practice/Practice Management (4 weeks) Elective rotational learning experiences, incorporated according to resident interest and preceptor availability. These may include, but are not limited to: Advanced Ambulatory Care (4-6 weeks) Advanced Infectious Disease (4-6 weeks) Emergency Medicine (4-6 weeks) Oncology (4-6 weeks) Cardiology (4-6 weeks) Longitudinal learning experiences: Clinical Research Project Ambulatory Care (½ day a week in an AmCare Clinic setting, in addition to Anticoagulation patients assigned to you for follow up) Practice Management (minimum 8hr per month equivalent of staffing inpatient pharmacy, typically done as two half day shifts per month) |
