This Post-Graduate Year 1 (PGY-1) Managed Care Residency Program, established in July 2000, was designed to train pharmacists to meet the demands and challenges faced in today’s managed care environment. Residents will gain experience in various aspects of managed care within a pharmacy and medical management setting by rotating through several departments of OptumRx. Residents will also develop innovative programs and contribute to ongoing projects.
The PGY-1 Managed Care Residency Program builds on the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to further develop managed care pharmacist leaders responsible for population-based, medication-related patient care. Following successful completion of the program, residency graduates will be qualified for a variety of roles in managed care, including positions in the following areas:
• Formulary management and operations • Industry relation • Client services • Clinical programs
• Drug utilization management • Pharmacy and therapeutics (P&T) • Drug information • Prior authorization
Applicants must meet the following requirements to be considered for the resident position:
• A PharmD graduate from an accredited pharmacy school or college
• Licensed to practice pharmacy in the state of California by September 30
• Complete a personal, onsite interview with the Residency Advisory Committee
About OptumRx Managed Care Residency
Avella is a national specialty pharmacy dedicated to empowering patients, providers and other organizations across the entire healthcare continuum. We are invested in improving the health—and the lives—of the people we serve. We accomplish this goal by acting as expert clinicians, passionate advocates, committed healthcare partners and strategic innovators.
Avella provides a level of service and support that is rarely seen today. Our patient satisfaction rate is more than just a metric—it is a reflection of our commitment to caring for patients on their terms. We consistently hear from patients that we are “remarkable” “extraordinary” and “make a difference” in their lives. We earn these accolades by striving to respect each individual’s time, address their concerns about treatment and support their emotional well-being.
Yet we also employ the leading technology of tomorrow to complement, and not replace, our high-touch approach.
This includes mobile apps, a provider portal and smart pill bottles designed to improve care and create a better patient and provider experience.
Our staff collaborate with providers, drug manufacturers and payers to guide patients through every... step of their treatment— from securing prior authorization to product fulfillment and mid-therapy support. Our pharmacists can work with providers at a peer-to-peer level thanks to their deep disease state knowledge in specialties like oncology, pain and addiction management, infectious diseases and many other complex, chronic conditions.
Avella is actively improving access to care through our powerful specialty medications, including 50-plus limited distribution drugs, as well as compounded therapies created in our state-of-the-art clean rooms.
