Job Summary Caltech offers excellent opportunities for the study and performance of music, theater, and the visual arts. Within the Performing and Visual Arts program, the Caltech Orchestra is comprised of select Caltech students, plus affiliated community members largely drawn from Caltech's faculty, staff and alumni, including the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). Performing a wide range of repertoire, from classics to music of today, the orchestra regularly combines with the Caltech Choir, and features student soloists through its annual concerto competition. Performing three pairs of concerts per academic year, it offers the Caltech community a rich musical experience, presented by performers who are highly accomplished in both science and music.
The Orchestra Director will conduct approximately six concerts (3-4 programs) per year, and will direct rehearsals once a week during the school year.
In addition to auditioning members, selecting repertoire, conducting rehearsals and performances, and offering group and individual instruction in String, Wind, Brass and Percussion performance, the role may include supervision of professional coaches for sections of the Orchestra, and hiring of supplementary professional performers as needed.
The successful candidate will bring an appreciation of and sensitivity to a rigorous academic environment where students must balance their commitment to their studies with their dedication to participation in musical activities, and will maintain a group open to faculty, staff, alumni, and community performers so that these long-term players contribute to the quality and vitality of the group without displacing students.
This is a part-time, 20 hours per week position.
Applications are accepted through December 15, 2019.
