The UCSD Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine (CMM) is one of two basic science units in the School of Medicine where world-class researchers study fundamental cellular processes and pathways using a variety of techniques from classical genetics and fluorescence microscopy to high-throughput genomics, systems biology, and crystallography. Our 36 faculty and over 200 postdoctoral scholars, graduate students, and research staff work on the cutting edge of biology, cutting across fields from basic biochemistry and genetics to genomics, systems biology and stem cell biology. The faculty also play a major role in medical and graduate student training, providing educational and programmatic offerings that span several disciplines and provide diversity to meet the interests of a broad spectrum of students and scholars.
Under supervision, independently execute research projects; perform interpretation and analysis of experimental results and data. Responsible for overseeing lab operations such as inspecting and maintaining lab equipment, working with outside vendors, orienting new employees to laboratory practices including purchasing. Assist PIs and researchers in designing appropriate experiments. Maintain tissue culture room and keeping inventory of cell strains. Act as Radiation Safety and Chemical Hygiene Officer, guiding lab personnel in research safety training. Extract DNA and perform PCR analysis. Prepare buffers and solutions as needed. Work with senior staff, graduate students, and other technical staff in laboratory. Attend regular laboratory meetings and present results. Train other personnel in laboratory techniques and safety procedures.
Theoretical knowledge in biology and chemistry as typically acquired by a Bachelor's Degree; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Thorough knowledge and confidence in handling microliter amounts of solutions in a sterile manner.
Proven ability to carry out new experimental procedures with accuracy and efficiency. Demonstrated ability to plan and organize to optimize performance of tasks.
Ability to read, comprehend and discuss research materials. Demonstrated skill and ability to keep accurate data.
Strong organizational skills to order and maintain lab equipment and supplies for a large, productive laboratory.
Proven ability to properly use and maintain laboratory equipment. Experience in oversight of use, maintenance, and repair of laboratory equipment.
Ability to follow established Safety and Biohazardous Material Guidelines.
Demonstrated knowledge in basic math for maintaining ledgers.
Ability to follow step wise experimental protocols. Ability to calculate and prepare chemical solutions accurately.
Demonstrated experience with cataloging and inventory.
Strong knowledge in the operation of a personal computer, including MS Word, Excel, and Prism or equivalent statistical program.
Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) needed to interact professionally and effectively in the work environment, as well as to effectively and accurately document research procedures.
