Southwest Equine Hospital offers 2 internship positions in sunny Arizona. The goal at SWEH is to provide new veterinary graduates mentoring to facilitate the development of exceptional technical and diagnostic skills, as well as the knowledge and confidence to pursue a successful veterinary career in equine private practice or residency program. SWEH has a very high success rate of interns accepted to residency programs (internal medicine, dentistry, sports medicine, radiology, theriogenology and surgery). We are a no-drama hospital and pride ourselves on collegiality amongst the entire staff.
SWEH is a referral and ambulatory practice with a heavy emphasis on internal medicine, emergency medicine, dentistry and general practice. We have a moderate sports medicine and acupuncture caseload. Our surgical caseload is predominantly exploratory abdominal (colic) and soft tissue elective surgery. Our reproduction caseload is light (other than foaling-related emergencies), but opportunities exist for interns interested in reproduction to assist local referring veterinarians.
Intern duties include primary case management for hospitalized and ambulatory patients under the direction of or close consultation with specialist or associate veterinarians. Interns share emergency and anesthesia duty with associate veterinarians. Interns share after-hours treatments and overnight ICU monitoring with veterinary assistants or technicians. Interns are expected to maintain detailed electronic medical records and develop skills relating to successful business / hospital management.
Emergency duty requirements: Shared rotation including nights and weekends (with back-up). Interns are initially mentored / supervised, with more independence as skills and confidence progress. There is a senior doctor available at all times for moral or technical support. We try to avoid burnout and provide at least one weeknight per week and one weekend per month with no hospital or emergency duty.
Enthusiasm and passion for horses and their owners. A sincere desire for a career in Equine Practice- either specialty or general.
Graduate from AVMA accredited university, passed NAVLE, eligible for an Arizona State Veterinary Medical License, valid driver's license.
Additional Salary Information: Benefits Include: Health Insurance, CE Stipend, Liability Insurance, PTO, AAEP Membership
