University Hospital is home to the premier Level 1 Trauma Center for adult care and the only Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center in South Texas, serving a 22-county region. The Adult Emergency Department consists of 111 beds including 8 for medical resuscitation and 20 for traumatic resuscitation. There is an 18 bed pediatric emergency department. There are 84 adult ICU beds including medical, surgical/trauma, neurosurgical, and cardiac at University Hospital where provision of care is accomplished by attending physicians, intensivists, residents, acute-care mid-level practitioners, clinical pharmacists and other care personnel. In addition, University Hospital is certified as a Cardiac Cath Center and Comprehensive Stroke Center by the Joint Commission and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association – the highest level of certification available.
University Hospital, in collaboration with The University of Texas College of Pharmacy and the University of the Incarnate Word Feik School of Pharmacy, offers a challenging ASHP Accredited Postgraduate Year 2 (PGY2) pharmacy residency in emergency medicine with well-rounded required training experiences in emergency medicine, trauma and emergency surgery, pediatric emergency medicine, toxicology, surgical/trauma ICU, and medicine ICU. Electives may be chosen from a variety of areas, including but not limited to internal medicine, infectious disease, neurology, neurosurgical ICU pediatrics, and cardiology. Residents will have opportunities to care for pediatric and adult patients, both inpatients and outpatients, teach and precept pharmacy students, respond to critical patient resuscitations in the emergency department, and respond to code blue scenarios throughout the hospital. In addition, residents will demonstrate leadership and practice management skills and complete an emergency medicine research project. Residents in The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy Affiliated Programs are eligible for appointment as an Instructor in Clinical Pharmacy with the College of Pharmacy. There are also opportunities for participation in Pharmacotherapy Rounds, the Teaching and Leadership Fellows Program, teaching in labs and precepting clerkship students. Graduates of the program are prepared to take clinical pharmacy specialist and faculty positions related to emergency medicine.
