Internet2 is seeking an Associate Vice President (AVP) of Community Engagement. The AVP will support Internet2’s Community Engagement programs and activities, which include higher education, affiliate, and industry member programs, research engagement activities, international engagement and relations, communications, marketing and events programs. The AVP will lead the efforts of the Community Engagement team and be responsible for sustaining and enriching membership and community participation in alignment with Internet2’s strategic direction.
This is a senior management position with responsibility for developing and implementing overall outreach, engagement and membership/participation programs and activities for Internet2 on both a national and regional basis. The individual in this role will work very closely with CIOs and executive staff at member universities and within other communities that comprise Internet2.
The role supports varied important aspects around Internet2 and its members, including: framing and communicating the value proposition for membership in Internet2; identifying issues and challenges regarding Internet2 membership and how to respond; modes of interaction and engagement within and between Internet2’s membership categories (higher education, affiliates, industry and regional networks) and external stakeholders and collaborators; pricing of Internet2 higher education, affiliate and industry memberships; membership arrangements and benefits; business practices and policies related to membership issues; member retention and membership stability; strategic targeting of new membership opportunities; communications and outreach plans and activities for members, prospective members and other stakeholders.
The AVP CE, with the VP CE, works across Internet2’s programs, divisions and teams to facilitate coordination and coherence of policy, practice and communication/consultation relative to Internet2’s work with and perception by its stakeholder communities.
The role requires: a blend of executive and hands-on skills to effectively direct, and personally engage in, expanding community participation and outreach; communication acumen to strategically engage with national, state and campus leadership, research and education networks, affiliates and stakeholders; collaborative skills to coalesce and champion internal and external teams to optimize outcomes of cooperative efforts; strategic thinking and vision to contribute to organizational planning and membership program and event development; and a passionate desire to make a difference in the engagement of current and potential members and collaborators in the global research and educational (R&E) community. The successful candidate will have high work standards and be able to recognize opportunities and develop strategies to realize them.
This position is full-time, reports to the Vice President, Community Engagement and will serve as a member of the Internet2 Executive Leadership Team. This position requires up to 30% travel within the United States and may also include some international travel.
Develop and implement strategies to sustain and strengthen Internet2’s core members and to grow and enrich the participation of the broader higher education community.
Lead the ongoing alignment, enhancement, delivery and evaluation of Internet2 member models, engagement levels, and dynamic portfolios of value-driven member benefits, continually engaging member input.
Collaborate with other Internet2 executives and program directors across the organization to enlist and sustain engagement of higher education and affiliate communities.
Continually inform broader communities of the full array and value of Internet2 member benefits, collaborative opportunities, forums, programs, and services (Internet2 Cloud Services, Trust and Identity, Network Services) while staying informed of and communicating members’ needs to Internet2 leadership.
Create consensus around the objectives, working with the member/partner constituencies articulating their needs in the member/partner plans. Work towards anticipating improved and expanded services and overall value-added membership benefits.
Support and implement advice from the Community Engagement-Program Advisory Group (CE-PAG) in matters related to community engagement programs, including membership models, community events, and marketing programs and strategies.
Manage and lead a team of regional engagement managers that support expanded outreach and membership needs across the United States.
Work in close partnership with Community Events to support strategies that deliver high quality events for the Internet2 global community,
Participate and develop plans for Internet2’s strategic participation in related community events, such as EDUCAUSE, AAMC, and SC to gain deeper awareness of developments in stakeholder communities.
Collaborate with Internet2 Global and Industry Programs’ leadership to foster joint efforts involving university, industry, affiliate and global communities.
Engage and work closely with Internet2 Communications and Marketing group to optimize member, stakeholder, and external communications in support of program goals.
Engage with regional networks in matters relating to higher education member communities and Community Anchor Institution (CAI) strategies as part of the CAP program.
Direct and oversee the budget for strategic areas in this department. Provide input to VP of Community Engagement for Internet2 organizational planning, budgeting and staffing, particularly related to alignment and impact of Community Engagement efforts on overall Internet2 strategic priorities.
Provide support and act as deputy for the VP for operations and management of staff in the Community Engagement area.
Master’s degree (preferred) in education, business administration, marketing, and/or technology-related field.
A minimum 10-year track record of success in management of organizations and membership/member relations programs, in public-private partnership development, client relationship development in a technology-related field, higher education administration, and/or other related experience.
The ability to develop a vision and clearly articulate it to internal and external audiences.
Superior interpersonal, verbal, written communication and presentation skills with multiple constituencies including community members, executives, board members, and staff across all divisions.
Demonstrated leadership in collaborative technology settings such as with campus efforts and/or product companies.
Experience formulating strategies and programs well-aligned with the needs of vertical disciplines and associated stakeholder communities.
Demonstrated ability to effectively build and manage/co-manage geographically and organizationally diverse teams, integrating the work of teams of relationship management and technology professionals to deliver comprehensive and cohesive regionally-based programs, services, and support.
Knowledge of and familiarity with researchers and research programs that can leverage the Internet2 infrastructure in their work.
Knowledge of today's cloud technologies and trends and evolving opportunities from the higher education, regional, and affiliate member perspectives.
Familiarity with emerging developments and requirements in research and education.
Project management, business experience and a track record of achieving objectives while bringing concurrent projects to completion on time and within budget.
Recognition and experience within the Internet2 community (preferred).
The motivation and passion to build and sustain a world class community relations and participation team that will consistently deliver value to the research and educational community.
Ability to travel both domestically and internationally.
