The Moores Cancer Center is one of just 49 in the United States to hold a National Cancer Institute (NCI) designation as a Comprehensive Cancer Center. As such, it ranks among the top centers in the nation conducting basic and clinical cancer research, providing advanced patient care and serving the community through outreach and education programs. The Cancer Center's mission is to translate promising scientific discoveries into new and better options for the care of patients with cancer. The Center supports one of the broadest ranges of cancer activities in the nation – from fundamental and translational cancer research in molecular genetics and advanced molecular therapeutics, and from population studies of cancer incidence to community education about cancer prevention and risk reduction.
The Laboratory Research Associate will be expected to contribute to the independent design, conduct, and analysis of experiments and their results and also preparation, presentation, and publication of results under the direction of the Principal Investigator (PI). Make significant innovative contributions pertaining to the design and overall direction of scientific research projects and propose possible changes or new directions in the course of the investigations. Read and evaluate scientific articles relevant to current research studies, finding new sources of information. The incumbent will be responsible for applying or adapting scientific techniques and assisting with the planning and scheduling of research procedures, recording the results of studies, compiling and analyzing data including statistical analyses, and preparing charts and graphs. Scientific intellect especially as it pertains to the immunology and molecular biology is essential. The incumbent will independently maintain and manage an animal breeding colony consisting of approximately 150 cages of animals, maintain laboratory equipment, order supplies as needed and assist laboratory management to provide support for students, postdocs and general laboratory operations.
Multiple myeloma, a tumor of plasma cells, ranks as the second most common type of blood cancer. Our laboratory is very active in the development of novel myeloma animal models to test novel targeted therapies and immunotherapies. We are also studying human primary cells obtained from myeloma patients, and our passion is to understand antigen-presenting cells (dendritic cells) and other myeloid regulatory cells operating at the myeloma tumor site.
