The Director, Alumni Engagement, fosters relationships with UC San Diego alumni, plans, develops, and implements strategies for alumni-specific programs, events, activities, and policies that are typically complex or large. Responsible for independently leading and managing a very defined program for alumni engagement and relationship management for the university academic division or professional/graduate school.
The Director cultivates and sustains relationships with alumni through personal visits, written correspondence, telephone calls, campus events, and through the facilitation of meetings with development colleagues and/or campus administrators and faculty. Manages and evaluates alumni engagement programs that advance the mission and goals of UC San Diego Alumni and the assigned Division/School. The Alumni Director sets strategy, develops and leads programs, manages investment, and is responsible for defined outcomes. This position reports directly to the Director of Divisions and Schools, Alumni Relations and works collaboratively with the Dean, the Alumni Relations team and Advancement partners.
The Director is the strategic liaison and representative between the Division/School, their alumni and UC San Diego Alumni. The Director engages the alumni community in initiatives and programs defined by UC San Diego Alumni and the Division/School; manages information and data pertaining to alumni engagement, areas of interest and expertise and general contact; and develops annual unit plans that represent UC San Diego Alumni strategies and priorities in collaboration with Division/School strategies and priorities.
The incumbent fosters strong working relationships within Advancement and with other campus partners to advance alumni engagement, by involving alumni in opportunities representing their areas of interest and expertise (mentoring, regional clubs, athletics, speaking engagements, volunteer programs, philanthropy, etc.) Identifies, qualifies and cultivates alumni to determine their capacity and inclination to provide philanthropic, volunteer and other support to UC San Diego.
Provides input for the creation and dissemination of relevant and timely communication in collaboration with Advancement and University Communications and Public Affairs colleagues to share news and promote programs and events. Responsibilities typically include a wide range of alumni relations issues, which may be controversial and/or sensitive in issues or content.Directors of Alumni Engagement will work for alumni-specific programs and are assigned a specific area of focus within Physical Sciences.

Proven success as an engagement officer in a highly sophisticated engagement-centered environment. Strong sense of ethical conduct that will inspire confidence and motivation with the proven ability to persuade colleagues and alumni.
Advanced knowledge of practices and procedures associated with building and maintaining effective working relationships with all levels of alumni, internal and external constituencies. Ability to establish professional working relationships and interact effectively with diverse groups having competing interests and priorities within the university and community.
Demonstrated ability to provide critical analysis, using sound judgment with realistic expectations for alumni prospects and donors.
Advanced project management skills, including skills to plan and implement successful events. Creative ability to conceptualize, develop and implement programmatic activities from only very general guidelines.
Proven success in initiating, planning, and strategically implementing cultivation opportunities through engagement. Knowledge of the principles and practices of developing and utilizing volunteer leadership and organizing and maintaining volunteer support organizations.
Demonstrated experience in and knowledge of the full spectrum of development including: solicitations, stewardship, donor recognition, high level boards, volunteer groups and administration.
Advanced written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including skill to produce information that is appropriately presented and effectively received by target constituencies.
