This is a full-time, benefits eligible, at will position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. but may vary based on operational needs.
StratComm is seeking to hire an Editor who will oversee the production of 360: The Magazine of San Diego State University, which is published three times annually (spring, summer and fall). The Editor will also support other print and digital publications and collateral, as assigned, to enhance SDSU's image, and to engage key audiences (alumni, prospects, donors, faculty, staff, students and parents). The incumbent will be primarily responsible for long-term visioning for the magazine, and is expected to have a highly developed knowledge of SDSU, current and world affairs, and issues relevant to higher education; excellent oral and written communications skills; exceptional interpersonal skills and documented creativity and organizational skills. The editor will be responsible for actively raising the profile and reach of the publication, in both the print and digital domains. The position requires an individual to have strong editing skills, advanced knowledge of AP style and a proven capacity for analytical and conceptual thinking.
Under the direction and with the approval of the Associate Vice President of Strategic Communications (StratComm), the objectives/responsibilities of the position are as follows:
The incumbent serves as editor and chief architect of 360: The Magazine of San Diego State University. The Editor will oversee scheduling and production of SDSU's award-winning magazine and the work of editors, writers, designers and photographers.
Responsibilities include developing content themes and story ideas in collaboration with the Associate Vice President; assigning stories to SDSU staff and freelance writers; hiring photographers and/or illustrators and managing photo shoots and/or the illustration process; working with in-house and/or outside designers on visual content; conducting research and interviews for own stories; editing copy and proofing designed pages; and working with outside vendors contracted for printing and mailing the magazine.
Under the direction of the Associate Vice President, the Editor will manage the 360 Magazine budget working with printers, mail houses, freelancers and other vendors to stay within the budget parameters and secure the best value for the university's investment. The Editor will collaborate closely with university partners, particularly in Alumni and Development, to ensure the magazine contributes to engaging alumni, donors and other key audiences and builds a solid foundation for further cultivation. In that regard, the editor will curate Class Notes to ensure accuracy and prevent liability associated with mistakes in this section.
Other responsibilities include growing 360’s readership through marketing, media relations efforts and the development of a more robust digital presence. Additionally, the Editor will work with the Director of Graphic Design Services to redesign 360 Magazine, giving it a more contemporary look to appeal to a wider audience.
Beyond responsibilities to the magazine, the Editor will also participate in meetings with other StratComm staff as a contributor to the department’s coordinated efforts to tell SDSU's story in compelling and effective ways. Primarily, the Editor will serve as a lead proofreader/copy editor for marketing material, news content, campus correspondence, papers and presentations.
The editor will work collaboratively with staff and assemble teams when necessary to produce various publications and other collateral in support of the objectives of the Office of the President and StratComm. Responsibilities include working closely with campus communications partners, development officers, deans and senior management to identify and prioritize key target audiences and deliver collateral in support of the university's needs and goals. The Editor will also conduct research, write and edit as necessary to ensure consistency and effectiveness of message. The Editor will also work directly with consultants, taking responsibility for the quality and effectiveness of their work product.
The Editor will also contribute expertise to SDSU's overall communications needs by serving as a project manager, editor, and writer and in other roles as requested by the StratComm Associate Vice President. Responsibilities may include writing/editing presidential communications on select projects; working with Academic Affairs, Student Affairs and other groups on campus to ensure consistent messaging to faculty, staff students, prospective students and families; serving on various committees or project teams and other duties as assigned. The Editor is expected to maintain strong and mutually beneficial relationships with stakeholders, including campus communicators, alumni, faculty/staff, vendors and others as a key representative of StratComm on and off campus.
The Editor will assist the Strategic Communications team with editing responsibilities related to SDSU NewsCenter and other publications and communications as requested.
The Editor will mentor staff writers and editors to hone their skills and ensure quality control of all SDSU publications.

Compensation and Benefits
Starting salary upon appointment not expected to exceed $7,000 per month. CSU Classification Salary Range: $2,502 - $9,083 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing or a related field
Experience as a writer, communication specialist or similar position
Experience with visual elements and graphic design, to include photography and brand management
Experience conducting interviews and writing in a range of styles; must have strong writing and editing skills, including writing and editing content for print/electronic publications and the news media.
Advanced story development and journalistic writing skills
Strong knowledge of Associated Press style
Advanced knowledge of current developments in electronic communications and the adaptation of print for digital, and digital-first methods
Expert grammar, editing and proofreading skills
Strong interpersonal skills
Experience developing and implementing integrated marketing and communication strategies
Demonstrated experience with establishing workflow calendars and adhering to deadlines
Experience developing short- and long-term communication plans and strategies
Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively
General fiscal management skills to oversee budgets and coordinate the work of vendors
Preferred Qualifications and Specialized Skills
Magazine production, writing and editing experience
Knowledge of the fundamentals of design and experience working with designers
Knowledge of the SDSU campus, its faculty, staff, students and key programs
Thorough knowledge and understanding of AP style and the SDSU Style Guide
Familiarization with logo and brand guidelines and their applications across the SDSU campus
A master's degree in marketing, journalism, communications or a related field.
A minimum of five (5) years of relevant work experience on a magazine, e-magazine or e-newsletter, or with a marketing firm.
Experience in a higher education setting is preferred.
Experience producing creative material and communications for use in a variety of media including print, TV, radio, online and other new media.
Demonstrated experience using digital mediums as part of a strategic communications/media relations campaign.
Understanding and experience working with print and new media to achieve communications objectives for a large, complex organization.
Ability to conceptualize, plan and implement marketing and communications initiatives at a large urban public university or similar setting.
Managerial experience supervising and directing the work of others.
